Your thoughts on the new Private forum?

I think the private forum is a great idea. I don't understand why people care if it's there or not. It doesn't affect the rest of the forum, so it makes no difference to those who aren't allowed in.

People are getting upset because if they aren't involved, they feel like they're pretty much not wanted on the forum. I can definitely see why people would see it as favoritism. All the big name cubers and a few other ""popular" cubers (I only assume because I've not yet even seen the thing) are allowed in, but all the "no name" cubers are left out. I don't even know if I can post in it yet or not, but I definitely feel like I contribute something to this forum. I can always help someone with what kind of cube they have, or with info on most cubes. Also, I feel like I'm fairly well known from my crazy videos. (Maybe not known in a nice way to everyone) I'm not the most popular cuber, but I definitely have a good portion of cubers that like my videos, or helpful posts. I don't really think I ever post junk, but still, I may not be a part of this new forum.
Edit: Oh, I see you've posted the link. Thanks dude.

after reading through all 12 pages again something continuously popped into mind..... this is like that story where there are the cool people(the members of the private forum in this case) and the people who cant play with them because they aren't "cool" enough. which is classed as bullying or inequality i suppose more than bullying. being "cool" is something that you either are or are not being smart(posting quality) is similar because everybody has their own personal limits on how sart they can be therefore making it almost impossible for some people to be in the private forums. so really isn't it a case of inequality?

There are 74 members allowed into the private forum, so the people that care think that the other 13,995 members are not wanted? They aren't using very good logic:)

I like the idea but I do feel as if it become a posting goal in the fact that new members might try too hard and post too much to try to get noticed. I also feel as if there will become a point that will come soon where they just don't invite people in because the members of that sub-forum will become too content with there buddies in there.

I like Stefan's first post in the thread listing people that have over 1000 posts. Even though post count does not equal quality necessarily, often times there later posts tend to be pretty good unless the account has turned into a joke account. But those people no matter how bad there posts are have been here a while(most of the time) and at least have experience.

I don't really get how people are going to get noticed the point that a mod will add them since it seems to me that it would be kind of out of the way to add them. I guess you could ask but that might be stupid and could severally hurt your chances of getting the invitation to the private forum.

@blakedacuber: Posting quality isn't something that is inherent/genetic. If you have bad post quality it doesn't mean you will always have bad post quality. You can improve by just paying more attention to your own posts... improve the grammar and organization of what you write, lurk more and post only when you have something to add, think for yourself more and try to figure out new stuff that you didn't read somewhere. It's not easy (nothing important is), but if you have bad post quality, it means you are capable of improving it.

And there's nothing wrong with inequality by itself. There is an inherent inequality in solve times, but who would want a society where everyone was at exactly 30 seconds?

PS: I think I need to point out again that this isn't a gated community of elite members, it's just a place to put topics that need to be kept away from the masses of potentially unproductive posters. There won't be all that many topics there, and the people in that area will still be part of the rest of the forum.

It's not all about what you know.
If I recall correctly, it was stated elsewhere that some members have been accepted more or less based on the fact that they can efficiently contribute to a civilized discussion. Sure a misplaced question can be a cause of aggravation, but if that misplaced question is backed up with social skills and some back ground info as to why it was asked, it's less likely to be frowned upon and seen as an aggravation in the course of a discussion. *breaths*.

Just throwing my two cents in here.
Hopefully this works out and manages to get some good discussion going without the clutter that normally happens in potentially good threads. I have the same type of problem as Weston though where I'd worry about the thread quality of the rest of the forum (due to people trying to get into the private forum).

DAMN! I didn't get a letter jacket. Hahahaha. This reminds me of Saved by the Bell, when Zach wanted to get into that 3 person club in school just to get a jacket, so he had to be mean to his friends. Then, they finally admit that they were just tricking him and were never really going to let him in.

Okay this is just an idea I had.
I wrote up with it before reading this thread so fell free to point out problems. There are a few things that were said already.
I also hope that skim-reading 13 pages is forgivable :)

I think instead of a private forum, we should add an option to members to "filter" existing forums of "non contributing members"
So in a thread with say, Statchu, Kirjava, Fazrulz and Jorghi, the option would show all posts from "contributing members such an Faz, Kir and Statchu and would hide all posts from Jorghi.
This way we could compile our own lists as well, If you for example if you think Jorghi has very good ideas you can see his posts
Also, I think with a private forum, many ideas from many non-members would get great ideas and not be able to post them
Finally,(i think) I'm sure people will post threads in the private and non- private forums anyway,
I'm sure there will be a private one answer question thread or private random cubing disscussion thread.
Why not merge?

Anyway there was one big problem I found after reading this thread, and that was this would not encourage people to make "quality posts".
A problem I realised before is this system would be hard to explain to newcomers.

Please post opinions and problems. I'm sure I've left something out

edit: Never mind, this is a bad idea. The this would never make a perfect copy of a private thread. Members will still answer non members questions and non members will ask questions and non members will answer (the question visible and the answer not) .It would not give the same quality of the private thread

What really irritates me about the new forum (well, this is the only thing), is that when non private members have something really constructive to post, they can't. Take this post for example. At the time of my post, this post has been unreplied to for over 30 minutes and my reply would basically point out that it still relys on use of technology (internet) to access the scrambles.

I'm 100% sure others will notice that flaw, but it's still frustrating to not be able to chime in with something. That's my only complaint really. It's nice to see good discussion.

Yeah, but then you might have the problem where someone hid one of Jorgi's posts but not posts from the others that answer that Jorgi post, so you'd have all these posts answering a post you couldn't see, and they wouldn't make sense. I could see that happening quite a bit.

This is a problem and though I think this is a very bad one, you could just pm somebody to post it in the thread.

And this is the main reason I posted my idea in my previous post

I was thinking about that, but in all honesty, who would do that every time they want to contribute? I'd much rather just be able to post there myself. Me having to PM first, gives the impression of "hey, run the idea through me first, and if it is acceptable I'll go ahead and post it."

Treats us as if we are incapable of recognizing what good posts are.

We're not mad tho..right? Plenty of other threads to visit/spam. Fun ones at that.....Where's the av me and Paz got over your way btw bruv?
Shame the "Dis' the member above you" thread has been removed though. StachuUUUUUU!!? Give it back, I saw it first! Finders keepers ;)

Oh well this idea is useless then....

Just do what Weston said (make one private and one public thread) Better than my idea

So let's just make it really private, with outsiders not being able to read. Problem solved.

And after the insiders are done with a topic, it could still be released into the wild (moved to a normal subforum) for everybody to read and discuss.

I, personally, like it a lot. Even if I'm not posting in it, I really enjoy reading threads in the private forum, knowing that they will be free of noise. Simply put, the general quality of posts is better, and the discussion is more interesting.

Although, I acknowledge that the rest of the forum could definitely suffer as a result. From the perspective of a member, if I had an idea for a thread, I don't really see a reason to post it in the 'regular' forum. If this comes to be, I hope that the private forum be dismissed.

I sure hope that I'm wrong, though :)

The exact reason why I was suggesting that some of those threads should be "hidden". At least until shortly after the beta-testing phase...
