[Unofficial] 25.44 3x3 blindfolded

Unbelievable.

How far do you think we are to 'solving' BLD?

Surely there has to be a limit with the speed that one can memorise, and a limit to how fast one can turn? Plus I think we've probably reached an 'optimal' balance of size/speed with free3cycle - I don't see that many people adopting 5OP in the future.

Amazing time! lovin' your algs. I'm not even close to switching out all my move-optimal for <R,U> or <M,U> friendly ones.

He's doing 3-cycles which permute and orient at the same time, not 3OP.

???

I just said that free3cycle is probably speed and brain-optimal... And suggested that 5OP (a possible extension - 2 move max setup to one of 5 (plus rotations/reflections/inverse) algs) could work but probably wouldn't be adopted?

Don't really see the room for confusion there :P

Was talkin about the confusion with the "5OP" part, since some people have suggested:
1. extending 3OP to 5OP, which uses 5-cycles to orient, and then permute).
2. extending "free3cycles" to "free5cycles", which permute and orient 4 pieces at the same time.
I wasn't exactly sure which one you meant since you implied a suggestion for an advancement, which would be 2., but you used the term 5OP, which would be 1. You probably mean 1., but the latter exists as well. Both are pretty unlikely to succeed the current "freestyle" approach though.

EDIT: This is all irrelevant to the thread though. We should be focusing on Aron's amazingness. :O

So you weren't confused by me using free3cycle? I never mentioned anything about 3OP...

5OP always refers to 5-cycle Orient Permute. As far as I was aware free5cycle only exists as a pipe-dream, and I would regard it as unobtainable as 1LLL.

I don't think 5OP would really reduce movecount all that much. Plus, the algs wouldn't be nearly as intuitive, so recall would be much more difficult.

I'd love to be proven wrong but I think the future of BLD will be smaller optimizations, such as dealing with flipped/twisted pieces, parity, and the use of multiple buffers.

Although the odds of being able to use these algs are extremely low, one may be able to use some of the really fast 5-cycles to their advantage.

Say we have the cycle DF -> RD -> UL -> UB -> FU

Most would do something like
y' U2 M U R2 U' M' U R2 U (9/9)
U2 R2 U' M' U R2 U' M U' y (9/18)

But you could also do a 1 move setup to a 4 move 5-cycle:
R2 (U M' U' M) R2 (6/6)

That's a third of the optimal 3-cyle movecount! It's a long shot, but I do hope some day that BLDers will be able to use these on occasion to make their solves more efficient.

I don't know. I think a 90 movecount average is possible with some extensions to 3-cycles. Memorization probably isn't going to get much faster, but TPS can still improve (mine is somewhere around 4.5 I think).
