Should 3x3 SpeedBLD become an official event?

What do you think?
Would it need to replace another event if it came?
If so, which event?

I would personally say yes. I actually think it could replace Rubik's Magic. Rubik's Magic isn't much of a puzzle anymore, and SpeedBLD would be a new, challenging event.
Just my opinion.

P.S I was going to make a poll, but either the poll making tool isn't working, or I'm just not using it properly. I googled it and found a few things, but none done the same way as on speedsolving. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No.

- Confusion for outsiders between the two BLD events
- Memo takes too long, and cba watching someone to make sure they don't do moves for an hour

3x3x3 speedBLD is the complete opposite of Magic, from an organizer's perspective. Magic is very quick and easy to run (no scrambles!), and fits anywhere in a schedule. 3x3x3 speedBLD takes a very long time (and then there would be the matter of figuring out how long that would be, which would be another long discussion). I don't think removing Magic would really have anything to do with adding speedBLD.

I'd love to have 3x3x3 speedBLD (even though I've never had a successful solve; I'm sure I'd work on it and get one if it became an official event), but I suspect it's impractical to add it as an event.

Some people, like Haiyan, Alejandro, and Ville, would probably be able to be quite competitive doing a normal BLD solve for their speedBLD solves. That wasn't even close to true back when 3x3x3 speedBLD was being held before! It seems like that really takes away from the attractiveness of the event.

(Consider a 30 second solve with 12 second memo - that becomes an 18 second speedBLD solve. And then consider they could spend really long making sure memo is 100% solid. I'd think they'd almost never miss!)

Yeah, the top BLDers are fast enough that this event would quickly turn into a "how fast can you do the execution stage of a normal BLD solve" event. It would be very difficult to run it as the event is meant to be, if it was meant to be anything at all.

Though if it were to replace anything, I'd be in favor of it replacing feetsolving.

Australia, mate.
Yes. Under the right circumstances, this could be a great event.

@Mike Hughey:
IMO, the memo time should be 10-15 minutes, so it should not take TOO long. I know this seems like no time at all, but in a discussion on WCA forums, a valid point was made
(by Lucas?) that this event would grow, and we do not particularly want to have to reform it like we did multi-BLD. Your statement about regular BLD methods helps confirm this.

That said, what's to stop it becoming regular BLD execution, as you said? I don't think we can feasibly ban these methods (or justify it), but remember, the winning times will still be those done with a regular speedsolving method, once we get to the point where we can memorise for one in such a short space of time. This, I believe, is up to the cubers. If we all want to be "cheap" and use our regular BLD methods for consistent sub-30 solves, then the event probably WILL go to pieces. But if we have just a few people upping the ante by doing extremely fast solves, (I know Lucas, for one, was almost there last I checked.) then the only choice for people wishing to be competitive would be to use a proper Speed-BLD method.

Using a regular BLD method may not be a bad thing either. It would be great for beginners, with less pressure to memorise, and more focus on getting the cube done. The short memorisation time would be PLENTY of time to memorise with a BLD method, and provide a VERY beginner friendly atmosphere, while the winners of the event would ALWAYS be the real (hardcore) speed-BLDers.

Or they could be Haiyan/Ville or something. Meh. I could be wrong.

Noooooo! That was my best event @ worlds!!! I'll wash my feet, I swear!

On topic: I see some pro's and con's here. First I thought NO, since there are too many events already. But it's at least a lot better than an event like magic, so I'd be in favour of it replacing magic.

And yes, that includes master magic. Do the community a favour, show off your magic skills on the tube and leave them at home.

All this talk about removing feet from the official events... Remove it the next time the regulations are changed or stop talking about removing it.

Doesn't work like that - plenty of people want to remove it, but not everyone, so it doesn't get removed.

Can't you apply your SpeedBLD method and do it during a regular BLD solve then just making a whole new event? You already have a judge there the whole time anyway.
The whole point of speedBLD is to have faster exec (as fast as your speed average, ideally) at the expense of a hugely increased memorization time. So you'd be way way slower doing this during the real BLD round.

I gotta say, the ability to do a normal BLD solve kinda breaks the idea of a competition speedBLD. Considering normal BLD has a much higher success rate (probability of misremembering/misexecuting a case after ten minutes of practice << probability of mistracing a piece when you only have ten minutes), unless you are completely certain of winning or you're trying for a WR, most competitors would tend to do better with a normal BLD strategy.

It should not be an official event unless it has caught on unofficially and "unofficially."

15 minute memo in the corner (judged like FMC if there are a lot) followed by a minute on stage is doable.

I think a lot of the arguments put forth for or against official speed BLD are silly, but the confusion for the public is a legitimate concern I haven't heard before. Not sure what to do about that, even though it should not be an over-riding concern.

It is a very interesting event. Regular method solve speed will beat regular BLD exec, and if we end up with some hybrid idea or something entirely new, that would be *awesome.* Finally another event that actually requires some thinking to do well, or at least encourages some interesting theory development.
