I'm able to solve using the beginners method and am now moving on to advanced methods. Fridrich is by far most widely used so there are more tutorials, so I went with that. But when I am doing the F2L, I struggle. I take 1:30+ to do it because of the pairing of the edge and corner before inserting it.

Using the beginners method you obviously insert corner then insert edge, but I can do that faster. (Even with my crappy Rubiks brand cube, I can do F2L beginners method under a minute, so when my new cube arrives, it'll be even faster)

Something I'm doing, wrong, or just needs more practice?

Also, is another method I could try? I wanted to try something different than what most people use, such as ZZ or Raux, but I cannot seem to figure them out. Not too many tutorials on them either.

When you learn Fridrich F2L your times will always go up. It will take time to recognise the colour patterns and pair them up accordingly. I could solve the rubiks cube using the beginners method in about a minute, when I started using Fridrich F2L my times shot up to 2mins. Now I am solving at 40 seconds. Just keep practising! and also, have you looked at 2LOLL+2LPLL?

Well once you have F2L sorted so you can solve it in about 20 seconds or so move on to 2 Look OLL + 2 Look PLL
I wouldn't really advise moving onto different methods because they involve block building and it's not really necessary to learn them. Let me know how you get on!

Yea, nowhere near 20 seconds yet. I'll keep practicing. Although I know my time with increase greatly just due to the fact of me getting a GuHong because right now I have a crappy Rubiks that says "Hey, what the heck do you think your doing? Trying to turn at 1 degree? Are you insane? Gotta be at 0 degrees. Idiot..." Then I'll get my Guhong and turn at 45 degrees. Like seriously, all the sides have to be perfectly straight before I can turn the damn thing.

I know exactly what you mean,When i started Cubing I had a crappy pound store cube that took me 4 minutes to solve, was horrible. As soon as I bought a speedcube, BAM! times went down to about 1 min 30. I'm ordering a Guhong too, they look pretty neat. Should speed my times up a bit as well.

Yeah, and actually I went ahead and bought The Ultimate Lubix GuHong, which if you didn't know is basically a GuHong that is lubed using Lubix which is lube made specifically for cubes. You should check it out. http://www.lubixcube.com Only a couple more dollars than the cube itself.

yeah I have some lubix, I prefer lubing the cubes myself, I have no idea why but just always have. It has been hard trying to find a UK site that sells cubes, In the UK they arn't really into cubing. USA seem to be really into it, holding cube days and stuff...

I wouldn't suggest learning the algorithms for all F2L cases. Just learn it intuitively and then you can look through the algs when you are familiar with it and use them for shortcuts. 42 algs is a lot to learn when you've only just come off the beginners method

There are no such things as intuitive algorithms. Intuitive is when you know how to arrange the pieces so you dont have to memorise lots of algs. There are only about 9 different cases if you learn F2L intuitively

WTF?

Have a look into as many methods as you can and then decide what works best for you.

Blockbuilding may take a little longer to master than CFOP but who cares?
Does it always have to be about getting fast as fast as possible?

You can get sub 20 with all regular speedsolving methods.

Just browse the wik and forum for the different methods

F2L will be slower, but trust me: it IS worth it. Keep practicing. F2L has brought me, personally, from 80 seconds to sub 30 in a handful of months, and it's very possible to break 20 seconds without even having to turn fast. Just keep trying.

You not doing anything wrong but you are learning at some pretty high times. What I learned was full PLL and 3 look OLL first, THEN I learned F2L. I learned it three months ago and my time sky rocketed, before I was at 34 sec then I went up to 48-49. All it takes is practice and patiance. I am currently at an avg of 21-23. A 28 second difference is good.

what? Nothing in that post made any sense at all.

Yes there can be intuitve algorithms. If you learn F2L intuitively and mess with it to find GOOD ways of doing things intuitively, then you look at the algorithms, many of those algorithms will be the same moves that you were doing intuitively. Hence an intuitive algorithm.

and how do you figure there are only 9 F2L cases when you do it intuitively? Doing something intuitively or learning algorithms for it doesn't change the number of cases at all...there are still 42 cases either way. Please look through the 42 F2L cases and explain to me how 33 of them would never happen just because you were solving it intuitively instead of with algorithms.
