[Unofficial] Mike Hughey Square-1 BLD avg 3/5: 8:59.83

@joey: 8:13.34 success! The memo time was a shocking (for me) 2:14. But I'm still slow working out the cycles while solving, and I'm always confused when I get to the end of a cycle. This one had 2 edge cycles and 2 corner cycles, so it was a worse than average case. I would imagine this method could be quite good for lucky cases where everything is a single cycle (which are actually fairly common cases). It might be the better way to go for fast singles, but I suspect it's worse for getting successful averages.

Since one of my big motivators was to do square-1 in relays and multis, I'll probably stick with my approach. But I'll mention your variant in my web page, if you don't mind.

By the way, I think one thing that may keep us from ever having square-1 BLD in official competitions is the possibility of a lucky scramble. If anyone ever gets an already-squared scramble, they'll blow the world record out of the water, and the only way to beat it will be to get another lucky scramble. Perhaps we could add it to official competitions with the requirement that any scramble must be at least 2 moves from square?

2 moves away from square I assume

Oops, yes, I mean 2 moves away from square. I'm so stupid.

Nice work Mike :)

The only reason I want you to try get some fast times with it, is because I'm not really dedicated enough to learn all 80(ish) shapes ;P

I agree, that working out cycles might be hard.

I sort of figured that. Anyone who has trouble being bothered to even do 5 3x3x3 BLD solves in a row... :)

But I hope you'll try the method. I can see where very few people will ever bother to learn all 90 shapes (although I fully expect Mats and István to do so!), but I still think it's fun to solve one when you don't have them memorized yet, just by looking up the shape case and then solving. Sort of an "open notes" solve. I did quite a few of them when I was first starting, and they were still a lot of fun when I got them right.

I just wanted to announce that my method description is finally up. It's at:

http://skarrie.se/square1blind/

Much thanks to Sakarie for providing the website for it!

I did all of this by hand - nothing was computer-generated - so although I proofread it and checked almost everything, I don't doubt that there are mistakes. I didn't check the "Moves to get to square", so I'd guess that's probably got a significant number of mistakes, but that's not really important anyway, since you can figure out the moves to square using my rules.

Please do let me know if you find any mistakes.

Great job, Mike!

It is amazing that you accomplished this just as you promised me at Nationals 2009 and 2010, and that you have memorized your matrix in such a short period of time. I guess I should brush mine up and practice more. ;)

Wow, it's an honor to get a post from you! Thanks for your inspiration pioneering this, Takao. I hope we can race square-1 BLD someday soon!

I think we're going to have square-1 BLD added as an unofficial event at Dayton...

a bunch of cool algs

Thanks for these - they include a lot of algorithms I really need, and they're all in one place. I'm trying to learn enough of them now so that I won't need any slice moves for setup - essentially a "BH for square-1". It's nice that it doesn't take very many algorithms to accomplish it.
