Hello everyone,

I just joined this forum a few days ago and just wanted to check in. I'm 56 years old and live in Iowa. I wonder if there are any other older people on here?

I got my first cube in 1980 when they first came out. I bought every solution guide I could find in book stores (I think I had 8 to 10 of them) and taught myself to solve the cube. All the books I had showed how to solve it by doing the top first, the bottom second, and the middle layer last. They just had different ways to go about it. I ended up making my own solution by taking the easiest to remember maneuvers from all the books.

Back then, I was the second fastest in my city at about one and a half minutes. That's pretty slow by today's standards, huh? I stayed interested in cubing for about 10 years and then lost interest during the 1990s and 2000s. Earlier this year, I was on some web site that sold gadgets and toys and saw something called a DIY cube. After checking out what it was I thought it was pretty neat to assemble your own cube so I bought one and got interested all over again. I now have 5 different cubes.

I no longer had any of the solution books I used to have and even threw away the method I made up for myself. After 20 years, I had forgotten most of the maneuvers but it all started to come back after messing with it for a few days and doing some internet searches. It looks like most everyone solves by doing top, middle, and bottom last these days but I still use the 30 year old method of top, bottom, and middle last.

I really have no desire to do speed solving or competitions. Doing the cube in less than 2 minutes is fun and relaxing for me, but I enjoy reading this forum and watching YouTube videos of all you fast cubers out there.

Well, that's enough about me. I may not have much to add to the forum but I check in and read the new posts each day.

I have a PDF of the original instructions that came with a cube by Ideal Toy back in 1981. That is the basis of the method I use.

What would be the best way to share that PDF on here??

OK....I tried to attach it but it says it is too large a file. The limit is 195KB and the PDF is 1.5MB

Hi QUOOBER, welcome to the forums!

You might be interested in chatting with rachmaninovian. He uses a method called 'sandwich' (mainly for larger dimensional cubes). Here he is solving the 3x3 with it:

If you're generally interested in cubing methods I thoroughly recommend having a browse of the [wiki]methods[/wiki] section of our wiki :)

Mats Bergsten is very active on this forum, and he's 60 years old. He's an expert at blindfolded solving, with great times for 3x3x3, 4x4x4, and even 5x5x5 blindfolded.

I'm 48, so not quite as old as you. But I also got interested in the cube back when it first came out. I solved it corners first back then.

Welcome to the forum!

fatboyxpc,

I tried uploading it to the link you gave but the link I got back does not seem to work.

Hey there...I'm almost 40 and I used to do it top-middle-bottom using James Nourse's "Simple Solution" booklet that was very popular back in the early 80's.

I have to tell you--after decades of silence the material that is available now is 10x more fun and interesting. Don't shy away from it. You and the cube will feel young again!

I'm 43. I too have been cubing since the early 60's

I'm sure he meant 80's and it's a typo. A lot of people on this forum look for things that are wrong just to point them out and try to one-up someone. When we're debating about cubes, competitions, times, or methods it's one thing but when we have a bunch of retro cubers reminiscing pointing out a typo like that is just immature since we all realize that it's impossible and we all know exactly what he meant.

Couldn't have said it better myself :) I'm in the same boat. Enjoying solving and learning new techniques, but no desire to compete.

Welcome to the forums! I'm pretty new here myself, and have found the folks here to be generally very friendly and helpful.

I'm also a old time cuber who started in the 80's and now had a relapse.
I'm 45 now and faster then ever :)
My best average back then was 42 seconds with mainly home made methods. Tody my best avg is 24.72 seconds.
