Old Time Cuber New Here

Thanks to fatboyxpc, the original Ideal Toy booklet is available here:

RubiksCubeSolution

Interesting. I assume this was something they started adding with the cube a little later on, after the initial release? I'm quite sure I've never seen that booklet, and I have two 1981 cubes. But the copyright date on it is 1981.

I'm in Burlington.

As for the Ideal booklet, the best I can remember, it was included with every cube I bought back then.

Edit: Now that I think more about it, that booklet had to be purchased separately.

Mats Bergsten is very active on this forum, and he's 60 years old. He's an expert at blindfolded solving, with great times for 3x3x3, 4x4x4, and even 5x5x5 blindfolded.

I'm 48, so not quite as old as you. But I also got interested in the cube back when it first came out. I solved it corners first back then.

Welcome to the forum!

That was about what I was thinking of to write... but I'm a year younger than Mike.

Besides us we also got Per of Norway (MrCage), like 45-46, Guus from Holland, just sub 50 like me and Mike. My brother 45 (Coinman). Ron 40+, Ton ~50... Rune is 80!

I probably forgot someone, it's a age thing :p ... Edit: Anders, also 47, [wiki]Petrus[/wiki] 49 or so.

I really have no desire to do speed solving or competitions.

Hehe, yes... you can do sub 40 using a sucky method, just you wait and see :P

Edit: if you time a solve you are per definition "speed solving", fast or slow.

Hi quoober, that sounds like an interesting technique. I'm just 40 years old but only cubing for the past 2. Still chasing that elusive 30 second average and learning lots in the process. I heartily recommend networking with other cubers - the competitions are lots of fun!

I realize this is an "old" thread, but figured I would add my name to the list as an older cuber. I bought a cube and a solution book back in the 80's when the cube first hit the U.S. and was able to solve it. I can't remember the "method" or the name of the book. I never timed myself back then. Just being able to solve it was pretty impressive to most people. Now I'm 40+ and I've picked up cubing again. I'm not sure I will ever compete, but I enjoy the challenge of trying to improve my times.

Welcome, MadFurai. It's nice to see that there are more cubers in my age range (I'm 36). A lot of the cubers I talk to are on the other side of 20, so it's quite rare to see any old heads around. What do you average on 3x3 now, and do you do any other cubes other than 3x3?

@yockee- Thanks. I just started speedcubing about 5 weeks ago. I only do the 3x3, although I got a 2x2 for my son to play with and have messed with that, too. I'm pretty slow right now, averaging right at 70 seconds per solve for the last 100. My PB is 46.86, but that was a pretty lucky case. I have considered getting additional cubes like the Pyraminx, Megaminx and a 4x4 eventually.

Hey fellow old farts! I'm still chugging along with this speedcubing thing... I did end up buying a Megaminx, Pyraminx, and a 4x4. My favorite is still the 3x3, but my second favorite is the 4x4. My times have improved, as shown below.
