Dealing with the strange looks

It gets really annoying when people ask "How do you do that?" I usually say "If it was easy enough for me to just tell you, everyone would be able to do it."

^^
If people ask you that again, really tell them how you do it. This works especially well with Fridrich. I lost a couple people at the cross concept. Most people lose me when I mention pairing up edges and corners.

Laughs, I just started and I've already heard 'he's not even looking' while scrambling. Can't people tell the difference between scrabling and solving? I mena I'm pritty sure I could tell the difference between the two even before I got one.

Seriously. This happens all the time. I'm scrambling and they think I'm solving it. I know for a fact I could tell the difference before I started cubing.

I think we should have a little sign round our neck that says "scrambling" on one side and "solving" on the other. :p

I hate cubing in public, therefor I never do it. Except if I'm at a comp and going out with other cubers.

I really hate that people think that I'm smart because I know how to solve it. I usually tell them that it's harder to learn how to walk, read or swim.

And it's really bad when they change topic from the cube and start asking me really personal questions, like if I have any friends, or gf, or if I'm a virgin.

But yeah, listening to music is the best way to gett rid of them.

I hate the stickers joke, I once sat on a buss, cubing and a girl came and asked me stuff about the cube and then told the joke. I just got up and walk to the fron of the buss and sat there instead. :P Come on, they all think they are so funny because they manage to recall a joke they heard in the 80's.

But sometime fun stuff happens, like a a couple of dudes saw me cubing and one said "I can only solve one side" (altough in swedish ;), the next one said, "I once did two sides", can you guess what the third guy said? It really cracked me up. :P

they also think many times that i keep track of it as i scramble it, and that then I just reverse scramble. They are always suspicious.

You know what you say to them then?

"When you get home, go to the computer and open notepad or what ever. Then close their eyes and strike keys at random and in high-speed and then they should recite them before opening their eyes (maybe inverted too).
Thats what its like to scramble a cube if you are used to twist it too"

Most ppl get the idea!

Or just hand them the cube and ask them to scramble it. They'll do the silly half-turn-so-you-won't-see-what-they're-doing maneuver, but after you solve it they'll get the point.

What I hate the most is when people act like they can really solve it sayin "its not that hard you know" to everyone else. They actually try to tell ME how to solve the damn thing.

Oh, and like you think you're the only person in the world who can solve it? Next time someone tries to tell you how to solve it, why don't you hand it to them and say, "Here - show me." You never know, you might learn a thing or two. If not, at least you've called his bluff.

ARGH!!! I hate that, like on youtube you see a guy do a -10sec solve and people are just like "Oh he just reversed the scramble" when you can clearly see the layers coming together. (sp?)

Nah, its just this one kid that does it. I know for a fact he has no idea how to solve a cube. Someone told him like a few days ago you start with a cross first and the next day he goes "So, do the cross first then the corners" and im like ???... Duh! Hes seen me solve the cube for like almost a week now.

Well beginner's to the cube just think you reverse the scramble or something (that's what I thought! :D:D:D). I didn't know that there were specific steps in the cube, and I didn't really think about it. I also never knew there were over 43 quintillion possibles just on a 3x3. I've also never seen anyone solve the cube, and as said before, I didn't really think about how people solved it.

Ha! Thats quite a good point!

Don't you hate the people who say that "I had an uncle who can solve it in less than 10 seconds a few years back..." I ask them for the name and it's some random name not found on GOOGLE to have any thing to do with cubing.

No. It's quite easy to tell who can and cannot cube. If I can learn something from some random person about cubing, that person would use cube terminology correctly immediately.

I'm not so sure about that. I could solve the cube for over 20 years without ever knowing anything about terminology or notation. Nobody else I ever knew could (or even wanted to) solve the cube, so I didn't need terminology. Who was I going to discuss cubing with?

Now that I've found a community of people who are interested in cubing, I sometimes struggle for lack of words. But that doesn't mean I don't know what I may not speak properly about.

For example, the way I solve big cubes is entirely different than anything I've seen on the net or read about on this forum. But I can't post about it, because I can't find words to describe the different parts and pieces, nor do I have the terminology to compare what I do with what everyone else seems to do. It doesn't mean I can't do it - or that I couldn't show you - it just means I can't describe it to you in a way that you would understand.

By the way, there are three different kinds of center cubies on a 5x5x5. There are the ones in the very middle (one on each face), the ones adjacent to the four corners of the cube and the ones adjacent to the four middle edges of the cube. The center cubies that are adjacent the middle edges of the cube can't take the place of the center cubies that are adjacent to the corners of the cube, and vice versa. Nor can the center-edges or the center-corners take the place of the center-middles. Does anybody know the names for the center-corners, center-edges, and center-middles? Or have I completely mangled this question so badly that no one can understand me?

And if you can answer that question - there are two different kind of edge cubies on a 5x5x5. There are the outer-edge cubies, that belong on the second layers from the left, right, front, back, up and down layers. They can be evenly exchanged with each other, but they cannot be exchanged with the middle-edge cubies, which are on the middlest layers exactly between the left and right, front and back, and top and bottom layers. Could anybody tell me what are the names of these different types of edge cubies?

And since I'm on a roll with all my questions. I know that to describe a clockwise turn of the left, right, front, back, top, or bottom face we would use the letters L,R,F,B,U and D. Counter-clockwise turns are noted by the same letters, followed by an apostrophe. I also know that lower case letters refer to double layer turns - i.e., r refers to a clockwise turn of the right outer layer and the right inner layer together. But I have no idea how to refer to a turn (either clockwise or counter-clockwise) of the inner left, right, front, back, top and bottom layers. Can anybody tell me?
