Yeah. You can't move on to (normal) F2L unless you AUF. Cross is done when you can start F2L if you ask me.

What if you do corner, then edge, then ll. Then cross would be done in one move. However, we can't see the back 2 edges, so they might be swapped.

I don't, as I said earlier. And I am defining cross as the stage at which one can insert matching corner edge pairs to solve the rest of F2L.
