Yes sorry, another 5x5 thread..
I timed my centers and edges today and the times just seem really weird.. I feel like my centers should be faster with my edges being so "fast"..

Although I just do centers intuitively.. I don't really know that many algs or special tricks.. Any websites for that?

Here are the times..

(Centers then Edges)

Centers Average: 50.70
Edges Average: 1:22.83
Total: 2:13.53

And just yesterday I took an average of 12.. and I got 2:57.48 average..

Although when I actually timed myself on 3x3 I'm faster (see sig) than 40 seconds like my 5x5 times would suggest.. is everyone else a lot slower on 5x5 doing 3x3? :|

Are these breakdowns unusual? Centers:Edges ratio I mean.. my 3x3 obviously needs improvement

If you did the 3x3 on a 3x3, or with inspection, that's cheating. Also, because of the way you must grip a bigcube to do the 3x3 stage and other related things, the 3x3 stage is somewhat slower than on a 3x3 cube.

I find that your centers and edges are relatively the same skill level, and you should just practice.

Ok I figured as much..

You think so?
Most people seem to have a smaller ratio of centers to edges.. idk.. I guess my centers just seem slow because I focus on learning edge tricks/algs..
Are there any good sites for centers?

Go to Dan Cohen's (masterofthebass on youtube and here) 5x5 walkthrough solve. Especially the yellow center trick.

Ah yes the trick to make the T - I know the trick once you have the T but I have a hard time recognizing that case.. I'll keep a look out for it thanks..

I suppose you just have to figure out little tricks like that yourself.. :(

Unfortunately his last two centers were very simple... I'd like to see more complicated ones.. my last two centers are very slow :/

I have an unusual breakdown ratio. For a 1:40 average, my breakdown is about 31, 44, 25.

My centers and 3x3 phase are rather poor. Whereas my edges are almost at "world class" level.
In solves I often get sub40 edges and sup35 centers.

And according to your WCA page you average 15 seconds on 3x3.. but it takes you 25 on 5x5? o_O

How is that uncommon? What were you expecting?

I knew people would be slower on 5x5 but not by 10 seconds..

BTW, my breakdowns are like <25-<40-<20 on an OK solve.

I don't think Dan has a 10 second average on 3x3 :|

I figured people would lose maybe 5 seconds on the 3x3 part.. because of no inspection and whatnot..

And I'm not saying anything bad about Dene of course - You're still way faster than me :P
Just a bit shocked that the times would be so different

I really laughed about this one. Apparently, my edges are almost almost at "world class" level because a typical breakdown for me is 45, 45, 45 (good solves have better centers and/or 3x3x3)

(and yes, I have an official 21 average on 3x3x3 and it takes me 45 on average on a 5x5x5)

Oh my.. Small hands? :o

It's more a percentage increase than a "fixed number" increase.

My breakdown is probably something like 35-55-30.

I don't see anything unusual about a 15 sec avg on 3x3 with a 25 sec 3x3 stage.

35-60-20 here.

I really need to improve on my edges... Most of us do :p Except for Arnaud. He needs to work on everything but edges :p

Further breakdown of edges:
First 4: 15-20
Second 4: 10-15
Last 4: 20-25

That lower bound is what gets me sub-1:50.
That upper bound is what gets me sup-2...

Wowza those are some impressive edges! I wish I could get mine consistently at 40. I have had sub35 on some of my best edges. The time I got sub1 redux I must have had beastly edges.

Zaxef: My 3x3 was over 30s average about 2 months ago. I have been working hard at getting it down. It is still getting better. I think I will be in the low 20s soon. But 3x3 is so boring. I can't stand it so I really have to force myself to practise.

Oh I see - My 3x3 was around there just last month .. And it was ~27-28seconds before my good 3x3 broke a week or two ago.. and I haven't really practiced since then since my other 3x3's fail :(

So I suppose 35-40 seconds on my 3x3 stage on 5x5 is normal considering my average on 3x3 is just under 30 seconds .. gotta speed that up with my new DIY after I get it at the competition in July

Sorry I think I was unclear. I meant my 3x3 phase on 5x5.

I was averaging about 17s on normal 3x3 about a year ago. I didn't practise again until about 2 months ago, when I decided I really needed to start working on it again. I have since started averaging in the low 15s, and as a result my 3x3 on 5x5 has dropped over 5 seconds.
