I went to the Minnesota Open in Rochester earlier today, just thought I would write about it.

It was a pretty good turn out at the tournament. 22 people showed up, and I made it to the finals. All of the cubers where very nice.

I got to try out alot of puzzles, my favorite was a megaminx. I kept popping this one kid's blue DIY cube, and he had to remind me twice not to try and solve it, he sounded kind of annoyed...

anyway, I forgot my first round averages, but I stitched together good enough solves to get about 30 or so average and make it into the finals.

In the finals my first solve was a 31.55, the next one was a surprising 23.80, but the the NEXT one was a 23.03! Both where PBs. I landed a 27.64, and also a 29.68. Almost all sub-30s.

The fastest kid was definitely Ravi Fernando. He had a 10.49 solve in the first round. I don't know his exact average but it was 12-14 seconds every solve. He also had an 11.84.

I think that the tournament was extremely fun. I would like to go to one again.

congratz! usually ppl do worse at competitions.

why can't caltech comps be free ? darn it. haha

what do winners get at competitions (this one/caltech(free vs. fee))

Yeah I went to the Minnesota Open too. It was really fun. I ended up placing second to Ravi with an average of 16.87 and a best solve of 13.15. Also, I won the 2x2x2 (6.49 avg, 4.15 fastest solve), 3x3x3 OH (39.17 avg, 32.30 fastest solve), 4x4x4 (1:33.21 avg, 1:12.67 fastest solve), and the 5x5x5 (3:05.05 avg, 2:44.36 fastest solve). The prizes were just certificates, but there was no fee so that was fine, and we got free pizza too.

We had certificates, but like Phil said, there was no fee. I looked into getting medals, but that would have cost $105. So even if we would have had a fee, medals would just barely be covered (assuming a $5 fee).

Since it was the first tournament in Minnesota, I didn't want to discourage anyone from coming, or add extra cost to anyone who was travelling a ways. Also, having the event be free also gave me some more freedom in advertising (certain places won't let you hang posters on "for profit" events).

Even if we had a fee, it would probably go to other things (such as purchasing our own stackmat displays). But as it stands, I would like to keep it a free event and try to just absorb the costs myself.

We did ask that people donate for the pizza, and we did just about break even on that.
