FTI - Face turning Icosaix

On the topic of FTI, I wanted to ask any puzzle designers a question about the 2x2 version of this puzzle. This video showed that it was impossible to create one of these 2x2 FTIs due to the pieces not being able to naturally slide over each other. My question is that if you were change the size or shape of the corner or center pieces, or add/remove some internal material, would a 2x2 FTI be feasible?

Unfortunately, the corner pieces would collide mid-turn. Compare these two pictures:

Look at the grey side of the white-red-grey-yellow-green corner and the yellow side of the green-yellow-red-cyan-purple corner. Mid-turn, there is an angle where they lie on exactly the same plane and overlap. (Twizzle only supports planar cuts so use a bit of your imagination.) What Greg did in his version was to lift up the side being turned so they don't lie on the same plane anymore (the active face instead being a bit higher).

You could shrink the corner pieces so that they don't collide anymore, but then it'd just end up as an Eitan's Star with some uncoloured pieces.
