Community Feedback: how can the site improve?

So, there has been a huge uprising in forum competitions, 99.999% of which are being organized by @Thomas.Caleb . This has started a little bit of a controversy, because he is organizing way too many competitions, and possibly putting other forum competitions in the ground. Is there a way that we could put a sort of limit on how many threads we can make specifically in the forum competitions area, and possibly other categories? Thanks!
I think there shouldn't be made this, just that there should be some rules for forum comps, and Thomas to finally learn how to make one

I think that changing the way locked threads work would be a good idea. Whenever a thread is locked it should be moved to either off-topic or smth. I don't think anyone wants to open the forums to quite a few locked threads that don't even have a purpose.

I’d personally prefer if thread locking was used less often

I have a forum suggestion, though I'm not sure how popular it will be:

I think we should get rid of two of the newer reaction emotes: "Meh" and "Eyes Up". The problem with these is that their sole purpose is to create negativity; I have only ever seen them used to essentially tell somebody "I think your post or opinion is dumb". If you think somebody's idea or suggestion isn't good, you should explain your thought process to them in a polite manner rather than subtly mocking them. At least, that's how I see it. In my eyes, these reaction emotes take away from the civil discussion that this forum is meant to foster. Perhaps we could replace both with one "thumbs down" emote as a more polite method of disagreement.

I also would like to see a new heart emote—not the heart eyes, but a simple heart, as a nice way of showing appreciation if you love what somebody posted. The heart eyes ("love") emote has a similar purpose, but I see that as less "hey, love your post!" and more "wow, that's amazing!". Subtle difference, but one I find important.

I don't know how the backend of this site is coded, but perhaps it would make sense to remove the option of reacting with "Meh" or "Eyes Up" without removing the reactions themselves. That way, previous reactions won't disappear, but new ones can't be left on posts.

Curious to hear others' thoughts on this. It's something that's been on my mind for probably years now.

I think I agree. I have grown tired of the negativity that the internet has turned into. For a related example, there is another forum in a different hobby that I frequent. On that forum, the members react to messages that they disagree with, or want to make fun of, by adding a laugh emoji. If we get rid of the two you suggested, will members here turn to the laugh emoji to make fun of others?

Maybe we could keep it simple with just a few of the basic and positive ones. There are certainly times when I want to thumbs down react here and other places when someone is harassing others, saying something completely illogical out of ignorance and hate, or just generally being negative. So I'm kind of unsure whether I would want a thumbs down emoji.

And here's the chance for someone to laugh react to this message because it's funny to use that very obvious joke.

Negative emotions should have a way to be voiced without a message.

I agree, that's why I suggested the thumbs-down. But the current ones we have—namely, "meh" and "eyes up"—feel like the kind of negativity we should do away with. It isn't constructive or polite. Those emotes are being used to send the message "this post is stupid and you should feel stupid", which is unkind and unnecessary.

A better way to do it is not to remove the emoji but sanction the people who use it badly. It'll be simpler and would not remove the freedom of speech

Freedom of speech means that the government can't punish you for criticising them—it doesn't mean that website owners can't restrict unnecessary negativity for the sake of a better, more friendly environment. Having reasonable rules and guidelines is good and necessary, lest this forum devolve into 4chan.

Making a blacklist would be more difficult programming-wise and would require constant upkeep to add users to the list, plus making an appeal system, et cetera. That's a lot more work for what is—in my opinion—a less meaningful change.

As a side note, I don't want anybody thinking I absolutely despise these emotes or those who use them or anything. It's just an annoyance that's lasted for as long as the emotes have been here.

What I meant to freedom of speech in this context is the freedom of using every emoji we want if it doesn't conclude to something offensive.

This forum wasn't built from the ground up, if you look at the footer you can see that it is powered by XenForo a (iirc) "template" to create a forum easily and rapidly. (I discovered this when I saw that the xda forum had the same loading animation as in the one in this forum which also made me see that a lot of the UI elements looked the same) Which means that it has a high chance of already having a blacklist or similar functionality. And if it hasn't : create a blacklist table with a user and duration column, if the user is present in this table disable the comment section on the frontend, and because you can never trust the frontend add a check in the backend. The check should be easy because when you're not connected the comment section is already disable so you just need to add a second check to the if statement. And for the duration make a cron job that checks between the difference of today and when the user was put into timeout and see if it is equal or higher than the duration set, and voilà!

I personally would like to recieve a notification if a user i follow posts a status update.

Obv this would be a toggle setting, as some people wouldnt like this.

Its cause i personally think theres no use to following someone, other then to show someone that you like them or what they post.

It would kinda be like how subscribriptions on yt work

Yeah, I second this.
Honestly I thought following someone already tells you what they posted on their status.
I agree with the toggle setting. What even is the point of following someone if that isn't the case?
