does Michael have the most consistent 3x3 average ever? this was his most recent comp(in 2013)

I did also find another pretty long name:
https://www.worldcubeassociation.org/persons/2017ABID02

well what would happen if there were more than 100 people with the same last name who first competed in the same year? what would their wca id be?

It will be three letters of their last name and the first letter of their first name, take yiheng wang as an example (2019WANY36)

bro if anyone beats this i will be genuinley impressed by their parents' naming skills

Tengku Muhammad Afnan Faliq Bin Tuan Farezuddeen Ahmad

Edit (the weerawarna guy might have a longer name but im lazy to count)
Second edit (the weerawarna guy is longer at 65 charachters, while this is at 54, didnt see it earlier)
Third edit (techinicaly this name is longer by word count)

The longest name in the WCA database is 73 characters, and belongs to this individual:

The shortest name is 4 characters and a tie between these people:

I used the WCA’s Online Database Query tool for this, with the following queries:

SQL:
-- Returns information for the person(s) with the longest name in the table.
SELECT wca_id, name, CHAR_LENGTH(name) as name_length
FROM persons
WHERE CHAR_LENGTH(name) = (
  SELECT MAX(CHAR_LENGTH(name)) FROM persons
)

SQL:
-- Returns information for the person(s) with the shortest name in the table.
SELECT wca_id, name, CHAR_LENGTH(name) as name_length
FROM persons
WHERE CHAR_LENGTH(name) = (
  SELECT MIN(CHAR_LENGTH(name)) FROM persons
)

Bonus, the most “names” for any single person in the WCA database is 10. This record is shared by two people:

SQL:
-- Returns information for the person(s) with the longest name by word count in the table.
SELECT wca_id, name,
  CHAR_LENGTH(name) - CHAR_LENGTH(REPLACE(name, ' ', '')) + 1 AS word_count
FROM persons
WHERE
  CHAR_LENGTH(name) - CHAR_LENGTH(REPLACE(name, ' ', '')) + 1 = (
    SELECT MAX(CHAR_LENGTH(name) - CHAR_LENGTH(REPLACE(name, ' ', '')) + 1)
    FROM persons
)

I don't think names with translations should count, I would just count it as something like Athanasios Papastathopoulos-Katsaros as the full name

In that case, the record is 65:

SQL:
-- Returns information for the person(s) with the longest name in the table. Does not include parenthetical content.
SELECT wca_id, name,
  CHAR_LENGTH(
    TRIM(
      REGEXP_REPLACE(name, '\\(.*\\)', '')
    )
  ) AS char_count
FROM persons
WHERE
  CHAR_LENGTH(
    TRIM(
      REGEXP_REPLACE(name, '\\(.*\\)', '')

  ) = (

Sorry, I didn't check for new posts so I am a bit late :rolleyes:

The longest name in the WCA database is 73 characters, and belongs to this individual:

2013PAPA03 Athanasios Papastathopoulos-Katsaros (Αθανάσιος Παπασταθόπουλος-Κατσαρός)
from Greece

I agree with @precompsubwr that the length should only count in one "alphabet".

But what we all can say: he holds the record for the longest entry in the WCA-database for the name.
And in fact he holds the record for "longest part of the name" with 25 characters, but only if you don't divide the name at the "-".

The "longest part of the name" without a double- or triple-name (yes, there is at least one) I found here (23 characters):
2021NARA01 Anuda Narasinghearachchillage
from Australia

For me the longest name is still (it is top with 65 characters if you count the spaces or top with 60 if you don't):
2022FERN06 Weerawarna Kurukulasooriya Busabaduge Thumula Theekshana Fernando
from Sri Lanka

EDIT 2025-08-08: forget about the most below, I did bad-coding and not-checking - Ge Qu is the correct name.
Thanx @xyzzy ! There is now one (or at least as I checked :D) with only 3 real characters.

And the shortest name? Seems like it depends on how you count. I found:
2007GEQU01 Ge Q (曲歌) from China
as the first one in the database with 4 or if you don't count the space only 3 characters. There are many others.
In Chinese characters he has only 2 characters. There are really tons of entries with only 2 "character-signs".

Forgot about this one in my post:

2023HASS09 Putera Ayden Rafique Bin Mohd Adli Bin Mohd Hassan
from Malaysia
