Yes but you do not have to learn them. They are recommended as you get faster but not necessary as a beginner.
wow, do you really sit there trying to figure out how to slice - flip -slice the last two edges tigether until you get either 1 solved edge + 1 parity edge or 2 solved edges?

I haven't memorized all 12 but I know about 7-8 of them and
it's a whooole lot easier than spending so much time and effort doing that the other way

Learn Clock. Its a fun event, and its easy to improve at. I havent even done 5000 solves, and I global 5.1 already. Make sure to learn 7simul when you're like sub 7. And use a QiYi clock.
7 simul flip is also a good option if you're bad at d moves. I jumped from 6.8 avg to 5.6 avg within a week or two after switching to 7sf

@Lord_Oscar not sure why you laughed at the Last 2 Edges algs I mentioned
They are verrrrrrrry beneficial when solving the 5x5
and they also apply to solving edges on the 6x6 and 7x7 as well ✅

Here is a link to Sarah Strong's page for the L2E cases and algs:
