I generally put my earmuffs on for the entire day. I use it for my MBLD attempts, workplace (to focus and code), travelling (to avoid horns and shouting) and during online chess to focus better. The non-cubers and people unacquainted with earmuffs feel that excessive use is dangerous. I feel it does not matter and is not a health hazard even in the long term.
I use non-electronic 3M X series earmuff which is comfortable even when I am running, sweating or in an extreme temp humidity environment. I have used 3 models of earmuffs in the past 12 years extensively and have not faced any problem.
Variable factors which make answering this question precisely impossible:

Variable factors which make answering this question precisely impossible:
- Temperature and Humidity varies from room to room, city to city
- Our ear canals need airing to stay healthy
- Everyone's ear, hygiene and earmuff size are different
- We can efficiently use our mouth more to compensate for the blocked ears
