To be clear, the hate towards Gil was mostly unjustified and in some cases downright disgusting. But that doesn’t change the fact that tearing down (only to reinstate a few days/weeks later) two sites that are among the most used tools in the cubing community because of a few bad apples is utterly silly and quite irritating.

Mostly unjustified ? Really ? That sort of hate cannot be justified in any way what so ever. You're annoyed that a really useful resource is taken down by someone giving so much to the community who is subjected to actual death threats ??

I'm surprised that both CubeDB and Speedcubedb are back to be honest. Kudos to Gil for being the bigger man and bringing them back because many people use and appreciate his work and efforts. If I was in his shoes I would have burnt it all to the ground never to be resurrected.

The fact is, Gil made the decision he made based on his own experiences and at the time he felt that it was the right thing to do. He has now been kind enough to bring back the website and for that I am very thankful as I use it on a regular basis, as do many other people. I think we should all just stop debating whether or not it was the right thing to do as we are not Gil.

In the end, both websites are back up and therefore we should be able to move on from the incident unless it happens again and be grateful that Gil decided to give us back such a useful recourse.

Personally, i've only ever used the site for reconstructions, as algs are super easy to find elsewhere.

People just seem to like having them all compiled on a fancy website interface , i dont see whats wrong with just a google sheet (or an excel spreadsheet, etc)

I've referred others to this website for it's wealth of algs... Props to Gil and support his decisions.. NO ONE deserves the hate he has endured... and we have to stand against it...

He doesn't owe us anything. Running a website is costly and time consuming. We should be grateful these resources exist for the benefit of the community, not spit on their creators.

An equivalent alternative to speedcubedb and cubedb would be really really nice, preferably run by a group that not one person has executive power over, or just run by someone who isn’t as prone to temper tantrums as Gil is.

Let's be honest. there are many, many other good alternatives such as cubeskills, cyotheking, sarah strong's website, algdb, cubingapp and many, many MANY others that were built in the last 25 years or so and are still up. Idk if i invented something new that wasn't there even from 1998 when i started cubing and used Prof. fridrich website ( http://www.ws.binghamton.edu/fridrich/cube.html )

I'm a human being and i'm affected when members of the community send me death threats. I'm affected when unknown members of the community people are sending me my IRL home address. I'm affected when KNOWN members of the community send me death threats while attending WCA Worlds 2023 without of being afraid to cover their identity sending it from their own personal account. I'm affected when someone posts antisemitic picture in the WCA staging websites.

I apologize for putting my own personal and family's well being before your absolute right to get your free services. I understand you wish i had kept them on while i was harrassed by a small number of people without the WCA intervention.

I do ask you, to reconsider the use of "temper tantrum", as i humbly state that these occurences did hurt my mental well being as i think any other would have.

Eh, Gil is not entirely without fault here. Some of his interactions with David Epstein were... sketchy.

It's saddening to see people in this community that put the fault of violent and antisemitic acts on the victim. That's beneath you.

Regarding David, the WCA Disciplinary Committee have already went through ALL of the interactions, including his comments about violence against autistic people during WCA comps, racists and homophobic remarks and harassing me for more than a year - for being the only one in a server with top 20 cubers in the world that stood up against those slurs.

So yes, I have been toxic, rude and offensive to him as well, to a point I had to beg and even offer to pay him to leave me alone.

It's very sad that some members of this community feel that it's ok to harass other people and somehow get a kick out of it. Has the Speedcubing community really become that toxic ? And Gil is not some random person, he has been actively trying to improve the community and resources available to the community and he is treated like garbage.

I would like to call on Gil to publicly name these people so that we all know who they are, so they can be avoided. No one needs to deal with toxic people.

Neither have I, thankfully. But I can empathise with someone who has been put under a very stressful situation like that. As I said before put yourself in that situation, how would you react ? People have very real feelings. Not everything is hidden behind a keyboard.

First of all, your claims are very fallacious. All you've been doing is giving meaningless insults and appealing to emotion. You've also been attacking me for things I never said, like

I've been thinking about this, and I understand how shaken Gill must be with death threats. Stepping back from the community was a clever choice. But that doesn't mean he has the right to shut down speedcubedb. That's harming the cubing experience of thousands of innocent people. When someone runs a popular website and they know it, they should act responsively, not shut it down randomly. Also, pretty much every celebrity has gotten hateful comments before. When so many people knowthem, there's bound to be a few that just hate them. That's something they'll have to learn to deal with, and not just get emotional every time.

Just another comment on the website itself: speedcubedb has recons and stats of alg usage. I learned a lot about "keep it simple" because of speedcubedb statistics and this makes it especially useful imo.

OMG. If this isn't considered selfish, I can't imagine what would be. So does that mean Google's CEO has the right to shut down Google if he gets threats(which is likely to happen because I think he's Indian)? No! That's pretty much a dictatorship. When speedcubedb was shut down, did you know it was going to be brief? Probably not. Gill acted like this was a permanent thing, before changing his mind. Now, does a permanent shutdown seem like overreacting? Sure does to me.

Well, then that is just people being ignorant, people should know that nothing lasts for ever and eventually things will change, but you do have a point if I was timing and training my algs on one website and it got shut down I would also be quite annoyed.
