Hello! I currently average ( globally ) 14.8-15.2 on 3x3. I use CFOP exempt for the fact I use 2-look OLL. I don’t want to become a cuber that puts off learning OLL for so long that they never can. I struggle to learn short algs especially which sounds weird. Currently I’m at 20 something /57. I have a comp August 5-6th and learning OLL by then would be really hard in my opinion. But maybe it is easier than I think it is. If anyone has tips/ motivation they can provide me that would be amazing. :)

By the way I’m using Cubehead’s OLL algs.

You can definitely learn full OLL by August, probably even sooner

EDIT: For someone reason thought august was 2 months away so my math was wrong lol

It's doable with an algorithm trainer

If you did 20 minutes a day for 24 days, that's 8 hours of total practice. That should be enough to memorize them and learn the muscle memory confidently. It would just take diligence!

P.S. I just wanna plug the fact that cubingapp has an OLL trainer

Honestly, I'm gonna have to disagree with the previous answers, While I think you could very well "learn" all of the algs by your competition, completely integrating ~30 new algs into your solves within the span of 25 days seems like a lot. Even if you could execute every alg correctly 4/5 times at home, there is still a greater chance that you wouldn't be able to execute them under pressure. Not trying to be super negative or anything, but that's just the way I see it.

I would recommend learning as many of the easier OLLs as you can over the next two weeks, and then drill those OLLs with the time you have left.
The "harder" OLLs imo are 3 of the I shapes, the awkward shapes, and the knight move shapes. Dot OLLs shouldn't be too hard to learn, as they are longer but easy to learn.

I do think it's possible to learn full OLL with the time you have though, I learned full CLL in about two months for a comp I had and CLL recognition is way harder.

You should definitely learn full OLL. It'll reduce your move count since you wont need additional moves at the beginning of OLL to make the cross, in addition to reducing what you average since you'll be able to do OLL in one go, which is faster than using two algs to solve it. Also, since you already began learning it, I see no reason for you to stop.

I noticed the others dont't really give many tips so:

I'm currently in the process of learning OLL. My favourite way to do it is every day/every other day do a solve until you encounter an OLL you havent learnt, then learn, drill and execute it in solves. Do this until you have learnt OLL.

P.S: Remember to break down algs into sections, this makes it very easy to learn

ill build on this: any advice for an algorithm trainer? I never really use one, except for the one built into cubedesk, but i want to get into the habit of using one. Also pls keep in mind i have a PC, so apps for phones wont work for me, sadly.
TrainYu by Tao Yu. You can use it like a traditional trainer, or enable the virtual cube and practice and learn algs that way (Which I find drastically speeds up the learning process).
