Both need good finger-tricks. Usually I will use MU when the block is in the back and RU when the block is in the front.

The U perms I use, grouped by location of the bar.
Clockwise:
back: R' U R' U' R' U' R' U R U R2 / R' U' R U' R U R2 U R U' R U' R' (OH)
left: R2 U' S R2 S' R2 U R2 / R2 U R U R2 U' R' U' R' U2 R' (OH, big cubes)
front: R2 U R U R' U' R' U' R' U R' / z U' R U' R' U' R' U' R U R U2 (OH)

Anticlockwise:
back: R U' R U R U R U' R' U' R2
front: M2 U M' U2 M U M2 / R U R' U R' U' R2 U' R' U R' U R / R2 U' R' U' R U R U R U' R (OH, big cubes)
left: R2 U' S' U2 S U' R2 / R U2 R U R U R2 U' R' U' R2 (OH, big cubes)
right: z U2 R' S R2 S' R' U2

Why limit yourself to RU or MU, when you can use LU, RUS, and LUS too?

For [Ua] I use the FUR one.

Personally, I use the MU algs for 3x3, but the RU algs for OH and big cubes. I find it is easier to finger trick the MU algs on 3x3, but I can often accidentally slice while doing M moves on big cubes.
Yeah they each have their place. Slices on big cubes are just hard for me to execute.

When I’m solving new puzzles for the first time (shape shifting, non-wca, etc.) I’ve found It easier to visualize or keep track of the M moves since the 3 cycle is much more intuitive with M moves than the RU version.
