My daughter really likes the 2X2. She has a PB of 22.12 using LBL. I know if she learns Ortega, she'll love getting faster. She is working on being color neutral, and I can work with her on making the first face more efficiently, we found a good OLL tutorial that she likes. She can do the OLL.

Our problem, is that the first PBL tutorial we watched, we were having a hard time with the recognition, it seems as though he didn't cover every case. So my question is two-fold.

First, it seems that there are different algs that are available for each case. Is that so? And if so, how could I figure out which are the "shortest" in number of moves? She doesn't finger trick yet, so a longer alg that may finger trick well but is longer won't help her. I'd like her to be able to learn them and the shorter they are I think the better it will be for her.

The second part is, is there a set of algs that are optimized? Meaning, if there is a "shortest" or "most efficient" alg, where are they, and why would someone use anything other? If she's going to learn, she might as well learn the most efficient, right?

Thanks!

Well I can't really help you with learning Ortega but IMO I don't think she needs Ortega it's to complicated for her right now, wait until she's comfortable with lbl and being Color neutral.

In addition to the LBL algs, there are only 3 new cases to learn. These are the easiest algs to remember in my opinion:
  1. If there are no bars on the sides: R2 F2 R2
  2. If there is only one bar, hold the bar on top facing you and do R U' R F2 R' U R' (or, if you want easy to remember rather than short, rotate the cube so that the bar is on the bottom layer facing left then R2 U R2 U' R2 U R2 U' R2)
  3. If there is a bar on both the top and bottom layers, AUF so both bars are on the same side, then hold the cube so that the bars are facing you, then do R2 U R2 (D2 y) R2 U' R2
There are lots of algs available because most fast Ortega users learn algs for several different angles.

I've never seen that before. I like it.

I like the algs on Bob Burton's site and this is a nice resource if you fancy speeding up the first face http://www.amvhell.com/stuff/cubes/ortega.html

It's great that you get to share your hobby with your daughter. Mine says she wants to learn but loses interest as soon as a cube appears.
