I'm not in a position to organize a competition anytime soon, but I have fairly specific ideas about what I would like to see at one. I suspect most people on these forums are in a similar position. What events would you like to see at a competition, and how would you fit it all in? Here is what I would like to see. A little crazy, but aren't we all:

Schedule.jpg

n=the number of timing stations. Limits are based roughly on allowing 1 minute between competitors if each takes the maximum time, and there is obviously a lot of flex room. One of the multi-BLD rounds could also be replaced with 5BLD. People competing in both FMC and MBLD would have to be scheduled for neither the first nor the last heat for speedsolving rounds, and if there are more than 3 heats then leave the last few for people who are not competing in the next event (in the other site). I could see this working very well with 6-8 timing stations, but I don't have any experience running a competition. I suspect that the lenient time limits on big cubes would draw people who are having trouble making cutoffs despite the lack of small puzzles.

Even knowing the events, the schedule depends on so many factors which vary a lot by region. Some of them are:
  • Number of competitors
  • Average experience of competitors
  • Average solve speed of competitors.
  • Scrambling speed
  • Efficiency of judges
  • Average time taken for a competitor to leave a solving station and the next one to sit down.
  • Layout of solving stations/waiting area/scrambling area.
At competitions like Euros or Worlds with very experienced staff and a high percentage of very fast competitors, holding all events for hundreds of competitors is possible.

At competitions in areas which have never had competitions before with mostly inexperienced cubers, fitting more than 4 or 5 events into a comp is impractical.

Just pretend it's a comp you are organizing, with the limitations and resources present in your region. I probably should have titled the thread YOUR ideal competition schedule, but, you know, brevity and conciseness and all that jazz. And "your" is a four letter word, and there are kids on here . . . ;-)

:) In that case, my ideal schedule would be a nice relaxed one day competition.

8:00 - 9:15 6x6
9:15 - 10:45 3x3 round 1
10:45 - 11:30 Pyraminx
11:30 - 12:15 OH
Lunch
13:00 - 14:00 3x3 Blindfolded
14:00 - 14:45 Clock
14:45 - 15:15 3x3 Final
Prize giving
15:30 - 16:30 FMC #1
16:45 - 17:45 FMC #2
18:00 - 19:00 FMC #3

No cut-offs for any events and the default 10 minute time limit for everything. The schedule would work perfectly for 40 - 60 competitors in South Africa. Actually, it's not far off from a comp we had in February with just a few events swapped.

I like the mid afternoon awards ceremony . I've never been able to stay long enough to see one.

I remember @Roman had an idea of writing a program where you just enter the competitor number, the events, cut-offs and rounds, and the program will give you a schedule which would fit the requirements you had. Sorry if it was someone else and not Roman :p

Having less commonly completed events first is useful. At the last few NZ comps, things like Megaminx, 5x5, Square 1 have been held first round of 3x3 allowing competitors to arrive later if they aren't completing in those.

Deal schedule. 4 rounds of every event in

Many times in the US it's the complete opposite.

Alright, lemme give this a try! (Don't judge, it's not like I've made 6+ official schedules already).

12:00pm-1:00 Kilominx round 1
1:00-2:30 clock round 1
2:30-3:30 4 bld round 1
3:30-4:15 kilominx round 2
4:15-5:15 clock round 2
5:15-6:00 dinner / feet round 1
6:00-6:30 kilominx round 3
6:30-7:15 clock round 3
7:15-8:15 4bld finals
8:15-8:30 kilominx round 4
8:30-9:00 Clock round 4
9:00-9:15 feet finals
9:15-9:30 clock finals
9:30-9:45 kilominx finals
9:45-10:00 awards

I don't think that this could ever EVER happen (mainly bc with the regs this is impossible on so many different levels)

A competition I would organize would probably look something like this:

Stage 1 Stage 2
8:00-9:45 3x3 r1 Megaminx r1
9:45-11:30 OH r1 Feet r1
11:30-1:00 3x3 r2 Megaminx r2
1:00-3:00 Lunch/BLD r1 Lunch/MBLD r1
3:00-4:15 OH r2 Feet r2
4:15-5:45 3x3 Final Megaminx r3
5:45-6:30 Dinner/BLD r2 Dinner/MBLD r2
6:30-8:00 OH Final Feet Final
8:00-9:30 BLD Final MBLD Final

Dream comp.

Wouldn't most of the people doing MBLD want to do 3BLD as well? It might be better to put them at different times.

Wherps

Edited. The reason I put them together is so that they could be going on a the same time, and people competing wouldn't have to watch their noise level. And, as MBLD has a cap of 1h, there would be plenty of time for the 15m of 3BLD for each competitor.
