[Help Thread] How to break the 2:00 barrier?

I'm having trouble breaking the 3x3 2:00 barrier, can I get help

At the point of 2 mins, it's just practice. You just need to keep practicing and learn fingertricks if you haven't already. That's basically it...you can sub 1 with beginner's method easily with practice and fingertricks

Solve the cube over and over as fast as you can for an hour untimed, then time yourself and I garuntee you'll have a time under 2:00. Like MoyuFTW said it just takes a lot of practice. Once you get down to under a minute you could learn some more advanced methods.

From the first time I ever tried timing myself, I was over 4 minutes. For some time I tried to break 4 minutes with the knowledge I knew at the time, I think it took a few days with some very simple beginner layer-by-layer method.
It's not just a matter of head down and practice until you get faster and faster. Spend at least half your time learning more stuff that you don't already know, if anything this is the fun bit, just timing yourself is the ego boost you need to know that you're getting quicker and imbedding the knowledge you've just learnt, but never stop learning more stuff and practicing it, this is the route to faster times whatever speed you are.

A couple of other obvious points:
Does your cube turn easily? Some cubes are just horrible, and even if you lubricate them, they're still difficult. If you haven't got one, a dedicated 'speedcube' is well worth buying.

If you're using a beginners method, it may be worth looking at other beginners methods, some are potentially quite quick, despite their ease of learning, whereas others take far too many 'baby steps'.

And you don't actually need to use 'finger-tricks' (single-finger flicking turns, rather than holding and turning) to get below 1 minute, even with beginners methods. Just practice, as stated before.

Your solve time depends on three things: how many moves it takes you, how fast you turn, and how long you spend not turning because you're looking for pieces or figuring out what to do.

I seriously doubt your problem is turning speed. At 2:00, you are probably spending a lot of time not turning at all. You are probably also using too many moves because you don't yet know how to solve cases efficiently or because of mistakes.

It really is just practice. Do lots of solves. Think about what you are doing and try to learn to be more efficient. Get to know the cube well. Don't put yourself under time pressure wine you are doing those things - work without a timer, and just do one timed average per week to check your progress.

Thank you, I'm now sub 2:00, this can be posted on for beginners trying to break the 2:00 barrier
