5x5x5 all but the last layer is solved. I am wondering how to:

A) Move all 3 edges, properly oriented, from the back to the front, in one fell swoop.
B) Move just the one middle edge, properly oriented, from the back to the front.

Thanks in advance.

pictures please, or clarify your meaning with the proper terminology. your wording is unclear

In each case, the correct cubes are 180 degrees away on the opposite side of the cube, i.e. front/back

You have incorrectly paired your edges. There is no way to do part A of your original question independently, and then do part B independently. You need to go back to your edge pairing step and make sure all of the yellow green edges are together to make a 'tredge', and do the same for the yellow blue edges

This can be solved as 2 independent cases. You are incorrect.

At best, it's a inefficient way to solve. The way you described it, I also would have interpreted it as impossible to solve the way you seem to want to solve it.

Learn how to do full edge pairing. Learn how to reduce a 5x5 to a 3x3. That's much better as a beginner's method.

... Maybe he's not using reduction? There are other 5x5 methods, you know.

One approach you could use is to solve the inner edges 'midges' as you would on a 3x3x3, and then solve the wings the same way as you would solve the edges on a 4x4x4.
Remember you can't just do a 2-cycle of edges, the best you can do is a 3-cycle. M2 U' M' U2 M U' M2 does a 3-cycle of edges, and you can do the M moves with just the inner most slices to manipulate the midges, or with the inner three slices in order to manipulate those layers also. Hope this helps.

Listen, you're the one asking the question.

This cannot be solved as two independent cases. If you can show me an algorithm that solves case A or B without affecting literally anything else on the cube, I will eat my hat.

Now, what you can do if you're not considering reduction is something like (green on front, yellow on top) Rw' Lw M2 U M2 U2 M2 U M2 Lw' Rw, and then cycle the outer midges with commutators or something.

He's not using any method. He doesn't know a method to solve a 5x5. That's why I pointed him towards a good beginner method, and it's also why I had no problem with telling him to use a different method than what he wants to use. He doesn't have a method, and doesn't even realize that the "method" he's asking us to explain to him isn't one that exists, or that is possible theoretically. He seems to be requesting algs for edge 2 cycles, among other things. Can't do that.

I started with a solved cube. I tried to move the 3 edges from back to front, and I did, but I made a wrong turn and messed something up. When I "corrected" it, the other middle edge was also swapped.

I made no more than 20 quarter turns to produce it.

Therefore... there must be a way to undo it. This was NOT produced from a totally scrambled cube, it was done from the solved state, and fairly quickly.

Gonna need to see more than that. Try to get three faces on the picture at once. And is this TWO separate cases, or two pictures of the same thing?

Also, please try to look up the proper terminology; what you're saying comes across as unclear nonsense. "the correct cubes are 180 degrees away on the opposite side of the cube, i.e. front/back" is extremely vague. We might say something like "I want to swap the UF and UB middle edges" or " UFr is swapped with UBl".

So, back to what you seem to be talking about, you can't swap two middle edges without affecting the rest of the cube. It's impossible for the same reason you can't swap two edges on a 3x3x3. You can move the wings around however you want, but the middle edges are governed by 3x3x3 rules. So if you JUST have the two middle edges swapped, your cube is simply unsolvable.

FWIW: (z2) Rw2 B2 U2 Rw2 U2 B2 Rw2 U2

I started with a solved cube, and was trying to swap all 3 "tredges" at once, from the UF to the UB orientation. The problem was, as I was messing around, I was also watching TV. I had both sets of them completely swapped, but there were some other cubes out of place. They were simple 3-cycle swaps once I rotated the faces into the correct starting configuration. When I was done, this is the cube I had. No more than 20 turns using the half turn metric.

So, there must be a way to get this thing back to the way it was. It's an algo waiting to be born.

....He gave you the alg. Start with white on top, green on front, and apply.

FWIW: (z2) Rw2 B2 U2 Rw2 U2 B2 Rw2 U2

I am not sure what the (z2) means. That's part of my problem, I don't understand the notation for changing the cube's orientation.

I brought the 3 tredges to the UF position.

I applied: L2 F2 f2 U2 L2 F2 f2 L2 U2 F2 f2 and everything was ok.

I will need to start filming what I do from now on, so I don't go crazy!

x rotates the entire cube in the same direction as R.
y rotates the entire cube in the same direction as U.
z rotates the entire cube in the same direction as F.

So z2 does this.

Best explanation ever :)

And an animation that has everyone else laughing I suppose.

So when you are solving and you see 3 edges on the 5x5x5 on the UF and UB faces, what algo do you use to get them all where you want?
