5x5x5 edge pairing issues

So I recently purchased a cheap bundle of cubes, going from 2x2x2 up to 5x5x5. The 2x, 3x, and 4x cubes have all worked out grand, but the 5x5x5 is causing me problems. I looked up how to solve it, and I found a method that involved solving the centres, then then pairing the edges, then solving like a 3x3x3. However, it was unclear on the algorithms and methods of pairing the edges, just saying it was similar to a 4x4x4. I can't seem to make more than 4 edges pair up before the algorithms just tear each other apart. I know this method wont be the fastest, but I'd rather learn a slow method first before moving into doing speedsolves on the 5x5x5. Does anyone have any tips, or even a better method for the 5x5x5?
