Mechanism

The 4x4x4 Cube (also known as Rubik's Revenge, and normally referred to as the 4x4x4 or 4x4) is a twisty puzzle in the shape of a cube that is cut three times along each of three axes.

The 4x4x4 Cube was invented by Péter Sebestény in 1981 and sold under the name "Rubik's Revenge". In the 1990s they weren't being produced. As late as 1999 Meffert's puzzle website was telling its customers that "the 4x4x4 cube went out of production about 10 years ago, and cube collectors all over the world are now scrambling to get hold of any they see for sale".[1] However in 1998 Chen Sen Li patented a new mechanism for his East Sheen 4x4x4 cube (released c. 2003). In 2000 Meffert's started selling a "Master Cube" which was a copy of the old Rubik's mechanism.[2] Similarly Rubik's began re-releasing a Rubik's Revenge in late 2000.[3] Since around 2010 other brands have appeared beginning with the Shengshou, Dayan, and MF8 cubes.

The 4x4x4 Cube has no fixed centers, but a total of 24 center pieces, a total of 24 edge pieces, and 8 corners. It has 7.4 x 1045 positions.
