In the context of speedcubing, a puzzle is an object with many pieces which can be manipulated in certain well-defined ways, the goal of which is to bring the pieces into a predefined solved position. Virtual versions of physical puzzles also count as puzzles, such as those found on Gelatinbrain.

Sometimes the definition of a puzzle is restricted still further to that of a twisty puzzle, which is a puzzle where the manipulations all involve turning a set of pieces around an axis. The Rubik's cube is a very good example of a twisty puzzle.
