WR failed...
It's only the first round tho. Hope he gets more great solves later.

But it wasn't. You might as well say "here's his average if he turned a little faster, and it's lower"
Yeah, compared to other stats in cubing, BPA is definitely overrated. I think it’s only applications are during championships when you want to see after the first 4 solves, does this guy still have a chance to win. Imo, once the average is done, BPA is kinda an irrelevant stat

No, in this case you have a lower bound of what is archiveable. And that sets up tension before a competitors last solve. Tension and pressure is relevant for an attempt, so BPA implies some context. Here: Yiheng hoping for an epic WR, it might influence his performance in his last solve

I don’t think BPA is always a useless stat even after the round is done. It depends on if it’s abnormally low due to one good solve.
Tymon’s BPA in his recent ER average was 4.34. That’s sub WR. Except to get that, he’d have to beat 3.67, which is not particularly likely, so BPA isn’t a super relevant stat there.
However, Matty’s current PR average had a BPA of 4.89. He only needed a 4.60 to get it, which is totally plausible, so I think it’s definitely a relevant statistic there, especially given that it would be his first official sub 5 average if he’d gotten it.
This falls more into the first category; currently the fastest counting 2x2 single officially is 0.63. But it’s not black and white.

(Bonus fact: this isn’t even the fastest official BPA in 2x2. The aforementioned 0.63 was in the same average as the current WR single, so the BPA was 0.73. But, like, who cares lol)
