[WR] Yiheng Wang 0.93 2x2 average

For those wondering - the regulation states that one must appeal to the delegate - or judge - before starting the solve if they are permitted to have an extra. Apparently, Yiheng told the judge before starting the solve that he wasn't ready, which counts as appealing and warrants an extra - at the delegate's discretion.

I personally disagree with this ruling. Yiheng is a very experienced competitor and he very well knows that he shouldn't do the solve if he wants to be eligible for an extra.

I didn't actually know that he appealed to the judge until like now lol but that's the reason why it's been reinstated!

He didn't specifically ask for an extra though, there's no way he would have asked if his time was good enough for WR. It wouldn't have been hard to not start the solve and ask for an extra, which is what he should have done. Despite what this regulation says, he was still doubling his chances of WR.

I’d like to know if there’s precedent around this. Without precedent and strictly looking at the regulation, I believe this was the wrong decision. What’s even worse is the back and forth changing of their mind. Will the board or at least a committee review this? Especially since it’s a high profile and precedent setting case.

I heavily disagree with this ruling. If you appeal, to the judge, you shouldn't be allowed to continue with your attempt. That just gives the competitor an unfair advantage as they can do the solve anyway and then have a choice whether or whether not to get an extra, effectively giving the competitor another chance if they screw up.

The wording of the regulation needs to be changed in order to make it clear that doing so is unfair and not legal. The WCA is going against their mission because of their decision on the ruling.

I hope they change this decision to maintain fairness in the rankings.

It’s quite strange they changed their opinion. It made me think that when I see people do similar things at local comps I should call them out for it but if this is the WCA’s I dunno.

Yes.

New name for this thread : ZAYN Khanani fans get ticked off that Yiheng got the first sub1 avg
I'm not upset for that reason. I'm upset about the fact that the WCA let an unfair result stand. I don't care who got sub-1 first, but what I do care about is that the WCA maintains fairness, which is exactly what they didn't do in this ruling.

If he appealed to a judge then the solve was not an attempt. He solved it for rescrambling and started the timer for fun.

Edit: I want to clarify that in my opinion the WR should not count. But we all saw the score sheet thus we have a contradiction and Yiheng did not appeal for an extra

Yiheng is an experienced competitor and would definitely realise that if he starts the timer and does the solve, it will count as an attempt. If he really thought it didn't count as an attempt then that is his fault, as there was no point in starting the timer. If he had gotten a sub 1 on the final scramble, he wouldn't have appealed for the extra. His appealing to the judge was not an attempt to get an extra, since he started the solve- it was purely just a natural reaction to the cover being lifted off early.

I hope the WCA disqualifies this result as he had an unfair advantage. At the very least, they should change the wording in the regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Edit- @2x2MasterYT why the meh?
