Looking at CubeSmith, the tiles for a megaminx are $11. My megaminx was purchased for $9, so if I got CubeSmith tiles the tiles would be more expensive than the puzzle.

Basically, it would be cheaper to buy a new megaminx when the stickers wear out...

What I am leading to is the question; do puzzles wear out? If so, how long does it take?

Would it be worth getting tiles and just plan on my megaminx lasting a long time?

How about 3x3's? How many solves is a Zhanchi good for?

20,000? 100,000? 500,000?

How much difference does it make if a cube is lubed well, poorly or not at all?

I have had my Zhanchi for about 3 months. Should I be looking at getting a new one soon or should my cube last longer than that?

How often do you get a new 3x3?

Yeah, that post has about 15 questions in it. I guess i'm still a nub. :o

Okay then.
1) Puzzles only get worn out depending on how much you use them. As such, the term "worn out" is debatable. I'll assume you mean completely unusable and even then, you can't gauge the number of solves it's lifespan holds because again variations in turning style and such.

2) Tiles are okay if you plan on having the puzzle for a long time. I will warn you though that if a corner of a tile lifts up over time and you catch it under your nail, you're probably never going to order tiles ever ever again. Like me :P

3) See #1

4) Depends on the lube and how much you use. Sometimes if you lube properly it will usually be better than unlubed one. Unless you know...you put an entire tube of lubix or can of CRC or a tube of shock oil, then yeah, your cube will turn out sht. The only lube in my experience that works great with quantity is Maru, but even then only a couple of drops will suffice.

5) Come on. Back when I cubed aggressively, my cubes still lasted a year and I stopped using them only because new improved ones came out. I've been using my Lingyun 2 for almost a year now and I'm probably going to use it for another year.

6) The only reason I get a 3x3 is a new one came out and even then it's not guaranteed to replace my main at that time.

This isn't entirely true, if you added lube, it could be cheaper to buy stickers, and from what I heard they last a long time, (still waiting for my order to be shipped so I can't have any opinion myself at this time.) Lube isn't always cheap like maru at cubedepot is $4.50, while lubix can range from $10 to $20 depending on size. This doesn't include shipping either which is free for orders over $15 with cubesmith, and can be free at few cubestores. So you can also get stickers for some other puzzles. If this isn't necessary you only have to pay $2.50 for shipping.

I have only had few puzzles "wear out" that is usually because of a broken or lost piece. Thought my maru fto explodes too often (I have tried to tighten it no success still explodes) to use so I'll count that as worn out....

see the first answer I gave

Depends on turning style, I've had mine for a long time, the only things that need to be replaced on a cube any cube are stickers cores or screws not once have I needed to change a piece, except when they snapped due to being carelessly rough with the dis-assembly of the puzzle, which was my fault not the puzzle's

Depends on how much lube and the brand of lube.

I get new 3x3s occasionally, but there never as good as my trusty zhanchi, except for the guhong version 2 but the new dayan color scheme throws off my recognition. Don't be afraid to get a new 3x3, but always stick with the best one according to your feel, and your times with the cube.

When a cube is lubed it last way longuer. A puzzle can last ages, it'S made of plastic. But for a 9$ megaminx (witch is underpriced cause it's kinda a KO) you can get tiles your megaminx will not get tu much used, beofre the tiles. And there is more cahnce that the megaminx you have, (let me guess QJ) breaks before that, because it's not the best of the quality. And for your zhanchi, like I said it's made of plastic, if it's lubed it can last a long time, I have mine for over a year, and it's still perfetct.

Personally I like cubes that have been worn out a bit over a new cube. However I clean my cubes and re tension and lube them once a month

It might just be me, but my Zhanchi starts to pop after the 4-5 month mark, but it would still be pretty good. However, I just can't stand having my main 3x3 pop every 20-30 solves, so that's basically when I decide to get a new main 3x3.
