Why does everyone hate Pogobat's beginner method tutorial?

I did not solve my first cube using Dan Brown's (aka Pogobat) method. But I do use his method to solve the top layer of a megaminx. And it is a good method for this puzzle.

And his 4x4 tutorials are good right up to solving the top layer. I used RobH0629's videos to solve the top layer of a 4x4 for the first time.

As I'm just starting my transition to full Fridrich and barely do 33" solves, I can only imagine how frustrated I would be had I stumped on the Dan Brown's method before finding Badmephisto's (the one that got me into cubing).

Dan Brown has so many things wrong... cross and f2l on top? I mean.. I'm a noob and even I can see all the disadvantages this brings. Is not just the inneficient positioning and moves, hard transtition to Fidrich or the OLL/PLL inverted thing: he is also really really annoying.

As I said in the OOQT...eff it, I forgot what i said.
1)Tyson Mao's beginner method is better.
2)His ways of getting faster was terrible. I was stuck on Sub-1:10 for a year.
3)MMAP saved my life by giving his tutorial on F2L.
4)Dan Brown LIED. He said he was going to make the BEST 4x4 tutorial out there. BULL.S. Rob did a better job. Especially with the 6-edge-pairing.
5)At least even MMAP said to use to break in and then clean it out. He even annotated that he doesn't recommend it anymore.
6)Dan's videos are stupid now, I unsubscribed.
7)Raise your hand if you actually sent him something.
8)He fails at fingertricks. "UHHHHH, DUN USE YOUR WHOLE HAND FOR THE U LAYER. USE YOUR INDEX." Thanks Dan, so why do you keep using your whole hand when doing U R U' L' U R' U' L. Oh sorry, I mean U R Ui Li U Ri Ui L.
8)He asked the people of the Internet to send him a Rubik's Revenge.
9)Pogotribe...sigh. Just no.
10)He believes spaghetti is a god.
11)What pisses me off is that Dan gets a lot of credit FROM READING OFF THE INSTRUCTIONAL BOOKLET and gets an interview and everything. Meanwhile, has Jessica Fridrich and Lars been interviewed LIVE on TV? With an interview.

Sorry for being an A-hole, but just venting anger here. Sorry :3

It's an alright tutorial for complete beginners. I was able to get my first ever solve using his video in about an hour, which is honestly pretty impressive since 99% of the world considers solving a cube at all basically impossible.

The only thing I don't like is, as many have pointed out, that it transitions badly into the wider world of speedcubing.

I think this could be easily solved with just a section at the end giving a very brief description of the other methods and where you can look them up, with the explanation that those methods are both harder and faster.

I honestly think this is pretty important, because I thought for the longest time when I started that his method was the only way to solve it, and all speedcubers simply did the beginners method, but were just really, really fast with it. I only found out about other methods because I looked up the wiki article on the cube and saw mention of faster methods and looked into them. He would only need 30 seconds at the end of his video to give new cubers a way to get all this information easily.

I'm a n00b and i learned how to solve it from his video. Now you guys are telling me there are better vids for when transisting to speed solving? Mother f... Well, off to see badmephisto's videos it is. >_>

I don't like how he thinks his viewers couldn't possible grasp intuitively placing first layer corners... Also, his last layer method is abysmal. So many moves for the whole solve. I mean, the first layer can take 30+ moves if you solve the cross poorly (likely since he doesn't explain it well, piece by piece) + Sexy move x 1-3 per corner. omg, it could take 55+ moves even with a good cross if all corners are 3 sexy moves. Jesus.

i learned how to solve it from him and i dont see why people hate him. i mean hes a great guy he means no harm. just because hes not a hardcore sub20 monster like all you doesnt mean hes dumb or something.

just because he is a great guy and means no harm doesn't mean his tutorial isn't horrible

his tutorial wasnt horrible. its all how you view it. some might find it very easy some might find it hard its about preference. i tried other beginners methods but i didnt like them so much cause they were sort of boring. his videos were fun and understandable to me and lots of other people. and the jump from his method to fridrich wasnt that tought for me either. i learned f2l in a day along with the oll and pll in a week. im sure other methods are an easier jump but at the time i couldnt find any better videos. you can hate his vids all you want but remember for no reason some people will just prefer his tutorial over badmephisto's(hes awesome btw his vid helped me with fridrich) :)

Here, I critique Dan's original video.

I'll make points about what he did, and my input.
Pros will be in green. Cons will be in red.

·Notation
He used the correct notation from the "You Can Do The Cube" booklet. This is also the notation on the Rubiks.com pdf (since they are the same). However, this is NOT what the WCA says is the standard. In his V2.0 tutorial, his previously incorrect "inverted" moves became the correct "prime" moves. However, his incorrect "U U" became the STILL incorrect "2U". In his defence, the notation is easy to remember and portrays the same message we do here:
"Each of the sides has their own face name, which has its representative letter. This letter may come with an optional extension, which tells the solver in which direction to turn which face. The face names are relative to the way one holds the cube."

·The Cross:
Solving with a fixed cross has forced me to develop a fixed cross nature--first with green, and now white. Also, I solve cross on U still. Usually I gradually rotate the cube with a drawn-out x2' rotation to have cross on D while solving the cross. But I digress.
His method for solving the cross is inefficient, but it's quite intuitive. It makes perfect sense.
However, he does NOT explain why one must pay attention to the FRBL sides to make the stickers match with the centres. He just says to do it. Additionally, he does not explain how fundamental the cross is.

·FL Corners:
It's great, actually. He does explain that the pieces we're solving are called corners. He also explains that the algorithm will need to be repeated x number of times, "depending on the orientation." He used "orientation" in his video. +1

·Medges
He initially calls the medges "corner pieces in the middle layer." This is just wrong, but I bet he didn't know the difference at the time. He explains that the medges don't have blue in them (yay!), that there are 2 cases (yay!), and that depending on which case you have, you'll need to apply one of two algorithms "that are backwards from each other." After applying each algorithm, he goes on to say that it doesn't mess up green.

·OELL
He says that after you solve the first two layers, you'll have one of 4 cases: the dot, L, line, or cross. He then says the cross is the goal. He doesn't cover how to solve the dot case.

·EPLL
Easy algorithm. Easy cases. Good job, Dan.

·CPLL
Easy algorithm. Explains two ways to look at it. Also explains that this can be done with a case with no corners solved, relative to the solved edges.

·OCLL
He opens, explaining that it will look as if you are messing the cube up, but that in the end, it shan't be, and "magically comes together in the end." Uses already used alg. Kudos.

All in all, it's not a bad tutorial. He tells you what you need to do and how to do it. However, he does go fast and fails to explain why things need to be done. Additionally, his fastness and straightforwardness does not carry the message as well as badmephisto or RobH0629 would.
Overall, it's not a bad tutorial--just too straightforward.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that overall, the LL method is okay. It's not that bad. It does make a good transition to 4LLL, methinks, but with a different approach. He does EO/EP/CP/CO, whereas traditional 4LLL is EO/CO/CP/EP. I didn't find it hard to transition into 4LLL, myself, because I found that the Sune, an algorithm I learned from Dan Brown, orients the corners in particular fashions, and that when repeated, would solve CO. 2-look PLL was a roadblock, though.

I never did hate it, people just don't find it a very fast method. I used this method just to get my cube solved but I never knew I would get hooked :3

as in "fast" I mean easy transitions into fridrich. I just found his video the easiest to understand.

Same here. I just wanted to solve it at first too, 0 interest in speed solving and now here I am. I just saw badmephisto's vid and it is indeed better overall, but for someone who really just wants to solve it and has little understanding of the cube, Dan's vid might be easier to follow.

I do hate the sexy move repetitiveness and is actually the main reason why i'm looking at other methods right now. When i get to that point i stop having fun solving it and i want it to be fun all the way.

Faceplamin' him or me?

I only used his tutorial to learn how to slove the cube, not how to speedsolve it. I didn't care how long it took, I just wanted to know how to solve it and it was a success. I never planned on becoming a speedsolver and most people who only want to learn how to solve the cube don't either Personally, I didn't have much trouble on making all the transitions. Cross on D, 2 look PLL, F2l, blah blah blah. The method maybe slow and there are a tiny few mistakes, but in the end it got me and many others to their destination: a solved cube.

I watched those videos just a few days ago, because I was curious what the fuss was about.

IMO, it's a well produced video (except for a few issues) detailing a method that saddens me. It treats the cube as an arcane device that isn't meant to be understood, just solved with mechanically applied sequences of memorized moves. Beginner's methods don't have to be this way. People have intuition. Hone it.

The "speed tips" video was awful. The fact that he apparently hasn't figured out the direct algorithm for solving the 'L' shaped edge-orientation case is telling. It's very intuitive.

I don't, the only reason I hate him, is he suggests Vaseline. I've sent him a lot of PMs and lots of comments telling him to annotate, and I guess he might not have seen any of them, but he should really do his research before posting a video like that.
His method and tutorial is great for beginners IMO.

when i was a beginner, i used FRUR'U'F' for orienting edges(an alg i rediscovered myself) and Niklas (rediscovered by myself, for correcting position of corners w/o affecting edges)...then i got stuck...then i watched pogobat's LL...
before, i didn't knew that spamming R'D'RD for the last layer sucks...till i realized that i didn't drop from 1:05...

now i realized that his tutorial sucks...and i do not use it to teach people how to solve, instead i use keyhole+4LLL as a beginner method for people i teach...
