Why are Some Puzzles More Popular Than Others?

I started doing 3x3 one handed from the start, before I even knew it was a separate event. It just seemed like a good idea for training the hands and making my moves more deliberate. The puzzle progression was:

3x3, 3x3 OH, 2x2, 4x4, 5x5, 6x6, 7x7, 8x8. I haven't had any interest in non-cube puzzles yet. Maybe eventually. I'd like to try BLD, though...I am just having too much fun with big cubes to sit down and learn something new.

I had a pretty straightforward progression from 3x3 to 4x4, 5x5, 6x6, 7x7. Then 2x2 (for completeness i guess). I also have a Pyra and a Fisher cube but I never solve them as they just don't excite me for some reason. Owning them makes me realise how much i only love cubes...

I literally just ordered a sq-1 a week ago. Feeling a bit bummed out considering the amount of negativity from people here. Ah well. My progression was:

3x3,2x2+4x4+5x5,sq-1(soon). Even though I only have a few puzzles I find it hard to give any time to them all. 3x3 tends to get most of the attention. I'm not getting faster in any of the others (like 8 secs on 2x2, around 25secs on 3x3,3mins on 4x4, 5mins on 5x5)

In order of what I leaned/started practicing:
3x3, 4x4, 5x5, megaminx, 2x2, OH, pyraminx, 6x6, 7x7, square-1, feet, BLD and well, I still have 4BLD and 5BLD to learn.

I started liking megaminx a lot after breaking my PB in my first competition :D
