What can compell somebody to spend hours staring at a plastic cube?!

First you should probably learn the U and A permutations (only 4 algorithms). You can solve PLL entirely with just those. After you've learnt those, start with other edge permutations (H and Z), before learning more corner ones (E and Y, for example, can save a lot of time).
