WCA World Championship 2023

Just compete in less events then
That's what I'm gonna do
I practice all 17 events.

I have been cubing since 2008. I never do it for profit but for the enjoyment of the puzzle and the community. I have attended 3 major championships in the past, barely covering my costs even after being sponsored.

My point is that it is not sustainable (for a competitor) to travel to major championships unless we have less reg fees and more prize money (also sum of ranks for top 50).

The registration fees for WC23 is insanely high. I take part in all 17 events so the total cost is 15k Indian Rupees which is half of my plane ticket. My sponsor Cubelelo would not reimburse 15k registration fee onno.
Wow, you can fly from India to South Korea for $300 US? That's amazing.

And it looks like a hotel room for 3 nights is about 2 1/2 times the cost of the flight. And there's still food. So I think the cost of the registration fee is still pretty reasonable given the overall cost of the trip?

That's reasonable considering it is a one time spending and I have 2 years (or 4 years in this case) to save money.

I'm sorry are you saying Stanley Chapel the best Big Blind solver right now is not going to win?!?!
While I personally would also still put Stanley as the favourite, I think you can't dis-count Hill being in the mix. Hill is from my region of the world and I've seen firsthand how fast his BigBLD memo is. It is a genuine match for (if not, faster than) Stanley's memo speed. The main thing holding him back is that he doesn't use optimal algs or advanced techniques (as compared to Stanley who does), which is honestly easier to fix than speeding up memo. Whichever way, Stanley definitely cannot afford to safety his solves if he really wants to win (obviously this goes both ways for Hill as well).

Is Kaijun still active? I don't think he has been back to any comps after COVID.

Flight from Hong Kong is even $70US cheaper than that if I fly via Philippines

Agreed. I noticed registration fees being high in my area too. It seems that over the years they've gone up a lot. I remember long time ago (16 years ago), some of the comps I went to were free. Perhaps that was not sustainable for competition organizers. Need to find a better balance.
