First some background: I’ve been cubing on and off (mostly off) since 2008. I started with Petrus because it was the first method I found, and I also liked the idea of a more intuitive solve with fewer moves. Since then, I’ve learnt the basics of CFOP, Heise (for fewest moves), and BLD. I’ve done some 2x2, 4x4 and 5x5, but not very seriously. Almost all speedcubing has been with 3x3 with Petrus, best average of 12 right below 20 and best single at 13 or so. I know the OLLs needed for Petrus (with cross) and full PLL. I also know a bunch of algs for BLD which probably aren’t very useful for anything else.
Now to the question! I want to learn try out CFOP properly, but I’m not sure where to start or what variant to use. Or maybe there are other methods that would suit me better? One of the reasons I want to switch method is that I have lots of bad habits developed when I didn’t have a good cube and speed wasn’t the goal. By learning a new (and better) method, I might be able to establish better habits from the start. I don’t cube that much, so beating my Petrus performance would be a reasonable goal for me.
I know there are many guides for CFOP with variants from beginner up to advanced, but I’m not sure where to start. I obviously know blockbuilding reasonably well and have some familiarity with the cube already.
Here are a few more specific questions:

Here are a few more specific questions:
- Should I remain colour-neutral? I’ve always been colour-neutral for Petrus, but maybe it’s too hard to recognise cases with CFOP if I don’t stick to white/yellow?
- Are there any useful skills I have learnt with Petrus that I should bring with me to CFOP that typical guides to CFOP assume that I don’t have?
- Are there any suitable guides that would put me at a reasonable starting point? I don’t need help with the basics of the method, but I’m also not interested in memorising a hundred algs either.
- Anything else I should keep in mind or check out?
