Timmah's Target - Sub 1 minute

So a little update! I'm getting much closer to sub 30 now, which is still my next target. I keep telling myself the next target is the last one I'll aim for, but we all know how that goes!!

I'm still using a method somewhere in between beginner and CFOP, I don't remember ALG's easily so taking my time.

A question though - has anyone had an ALG completely drop out of their brain? I literally forgot the alg I used to use for swapping last layer opposite centres. I hadn't had it come up for a while, and couldn't for the life of me remember it so had to relearn!! I also found I needed to slow down SUNE because I kept stuffing it up. Have I reached my brains capacity for ALGS? o_Oo_O

Great job!

No, I very much doubt you have reached your brain’s capacity for algs. That happens to most of not all cubers. For example, I use CLL mostly for 2x2. One solve, I can execute an Alg as normal, but a few solves later I forget how to execute it, somehow. All in all, as long as you keep practicing that alg, it would be hard to forget it.

So an amazing thing happened! I got a Sub 30 second time! slow for some people I know, but <30 was my next goal and am so happy to have made it!
Awesome job!!! You are doing great, and everyone improves at their own time!! May you get many more sub 30s, because now you know that you can!

That must feel so good!! Do you use 2-look OLL and 2-look PLL? If not, I would strongly suggest that you learn it at this stage. I would also recommend that you start understanding intermediate intuitive F2L. What is your current goal?

It does feel great @Jennah :) I am using 2 look OLL/PLL yes. My biggest slow points are still F2L, specifically look ahead to next pair) and occasionally losing track of edges on cross 😄.

My current goal is to bring my average down. If I could have it between 30-40 seconds that'd be great!

Lookahead is very important, but before you master lookahead, you should work on your F2L solutions. I average 18 seconds and I still don’t do lookahead because my F2L solutions are not always ideal. Lookahead isn’t necessary until you average around 16-17 seconds, or when most of your F2L solutions are efficient.
I’m not sure if you know basic advanced F2L, and if you don’t I would strongly suggest this video.
After you feel comfortable with advanced F2L, then it is a good idea to start picking up more efficient solutions for difficult F2L cases. This is typically at the 23-25 second mark, so don’t worry about it too much right now, but I’ll give you a basic example of what I mean:
Look at the attatched picture. A beginner might do a U2, take out the edge, and set up the pair. The optimal solution to this case is actually to do (R U R’ U’) 3 times.

The point is, at your level (and mine) F2L efficiency is more important than lookahead.

Hope this helps!

A good thing to help get better at the cross is finding all of your cross pieces in inspection and figuring out a way to solve them in around 7 moves. That way you’re only thinking of the moves and not the pieces themselves.

Agreed, and a great way to implement all of this into solves is to do intentionally slow untimed solves.

Ok it has been SOME TIME since my last update - being broken up with, selling a house, buying a car, buying a motorbike put a dent in my cubing time at the end of last year. I've still been solving, but very much plateued. My best mean of three using 2 look OLL/PLL CFOP is 44 ish seconds, and I haven't beaten that 29.416 I did in August.

My brain doesnt hold onto new ALGS very well I've found... I seem to have reached capacity :D So I thought I would switch things up and learn ROUX!

Let's hope I don't rue the day... *Cough*

It seems to work much better with how my brain works, and feels more me than CFOP. I'll give it a few days to learn and then time some solves and see how they go!

Cheers @pTr !

So, best time so far is 1:06 (first few timed solves were averaging 1:40-2:00) But I haven't been trying to break record speeds, just getting certain steps correct.

First two blocks are easy.

CMLL getting better - Sune/AntiSune more difficult to spot compared to CFOP.

I hadn't been solving the UL UR edges in LSE, so kept getting UA and UB perms at the end. Not a big deal as I know how to solve them from CFOP but technically not the 'right' way and more importantly, was taking a lot more moves to solve.

Now that I've got 3 cycle more sorted (see https://www.speedsolving.com/threads/roux-3-cycle-doesnt-work-or-my-brain-doesnt-work.94532/)

I can get through a solve consistently without pausing, so now just a matter of building up speed!

So it's a special day today! It's the 2-year anniversary of my first ever timed solve! 32 seconds with an ACTUAL Rubik's brand cube.

2 years on I've bought 2 speedcubes (recently bought a Gan) a chrome cube, and was given a chameleon for Christmas (haven't gotten around to solving it yet :D)

Roux is going well - times are coming down. I know all the steps of 2 look, it's just getting it into muscle memory now.

Ok So two weeks of Roux down, and I am getting faster. Gradually :D

Quickest so far is a 39.8, on the 20th so 21 days in. And up till now 294 timed solves.

In comparison, my fastest CFOP was 29.4 about 8 Months in, and up till now 1788 timed solves.

The math would suggest I can beat my target of sub 30 average with some work!

@pTr

So strongest is first two blocks and as I'm doing 2 look CMLL, its pretty good too. LSE is my slowest 'thinking' point. I didn't know there was different versions of LSE, but I'm using what I gather is the 'standard'. Arrow, left and right centers to the bottom, solve middle intuitively.
