The Solve Critique Thread

Here's my 4x4 solve submission:

I know I'm slow lol, the time was 1:42. I use my own adaption of Yau, I do the cross edges redux style and solve all of my centers first. I got slightly lucky on the L8E and 3x3, but other than that, this is a fairly typical solve. I just can't seem to get much better at 4x4. For reference, I average about 25 sec for 3x3 and 3:20-30ish on 5x5.

In general, your solves are pretty good. I would say to try to use look ahead to keep rotations in check (since you're obviously looking ahead otherwise) during your F2L, and work on PLL and OLL recognition. It also seemed like you were fumbling with the cube a little, especially during cross or while rotating to create/insert pairs. But other than those minor things, pretty good!

Any advice to get faster? (Video)

I have just recently gotten back into cubing and I was just wondering if anyone has advice on how I can get faster? I am currently in the process of learning full PLL. The final time on the solve in the video is 15.56

Hi I'm Ben, i've been cubing for a few months and have got my average down to about 45 seconds. Any feedback would be helpful as I don't know any cubers to give me feedback and I have my first competition coming up soon. So thanks in advance. (and sorry i'm not much of a videographer).

FYI: CFOP, white cross on bottom, F2L, 4LLL.

Plan full cross during inspection and aim to limit the number of moves to 8. Reduce pausing between F2L pairs. Keep practicing. Just enjoy your first competition and don't stress over it.

What SneaklyFox said, and then work on some blind crosses and F2L pairs, it should help you be able to plan out your cross during inspection, and to reduce pauses in your F2L. Good luck!

Thanks you 2, i'll definitely try them, I find that blind stuff shows me what i'm bad at anyway. My aim at the competition is to not come last :p.

Best of luck in the competition! I have a few roux solves here.

Hey Jedi. I watched your solves. Not too bad. The main thing I'd like you to work on is not doing cube rotations during block building. (x rotations are ok sometimes, but very rarely y or z rotations).

Also, I noticed you do a lot of M + M. I did this when I was starting too. You have to remember that M + M is the same as M2, so you should be practicing using M2 instead of M + M. Your M2 is with your left and U2 is with your right ,so that's good, as long as they aren't the same hand. Also, your M with your left is good. I'd like you to practice a different way of doing M other than your index finger though. Try pushing up from the bottom with your ring finger. It feels really awkward at first, but really makes your L6E fast (look at this video from two months ago when I was using the index, and this video from yesterday now that I'm using the ring push from the bottom to see the difference).

Your L6E actually looks decent for your times, and your CMLL is moving fast too. Just gotta get that block building down, which is of course the hardest part.

For first block, during your untimed solves, try to do the first 2x2x1 without looking at the cube. After you get comfortable doing that, you should start tracking the last corner and edge while you are building the 2x2x1, and eventually you should be able to do the whole first block blindfolded (I still can't do it 100% of the time, so that'll take a while, but that's the eventual goal on FB).

It's hard to see a lot of what is going on because the camera is only showing F. Next time, get an angle that shoes U also. It would really help me see a lot more of your strategies.

Keep practicing, and things will get faster, and I hope my advice helps a little :) Also, get well soon! The flu can't be helping your times.

Thank you! In the video, and for a while before it, I'd been doing the bottom 1x3x1 then adding the other 1x1x3 because I'd read on some tutorial that that was another way to try doing it. I didn't realise how inefficient it was until I just tried doing the 1x2x2 blind like you said. Also, doing the 1x2x2 block first seemed to stop the rotations anyway so that was definitely helpful! I also used to do m' and m2 with my right but it was inefficient so I changed it to my left, and it was easiest to transition by doing triggers like M2 U2 between solves. I'll probably do M U to get used to using the new M. Would a camera angle showing B and U be good too? Thanks so much for giving so much advice!

Ugh. I think I might do 1 in 200 solves as 1x3x3 + 1x3x3. Basically only if I started with a 1x3x3, and even then, maybe I wouldn't, haha.

I think F U is better than BU honestly. An upward angle, that gets either L or R and U/F is probably the best, like I have in my video here. It is kinda difficult to set up though, but it gives a nice view of the solve.

Hey guys, I am averaging about 24-26 seconds right now. And I have been stuck here for about two weeks. I know that I need to work on my look ahead, and cross, and f2l. But if you could give me any suggestions as to how you got over this hump or what I need to do it would be greatly appreciated.

And sorry, I may have over-edited haha.

Slow down and look ahead. I know this piece of advice seems to be overused, but really you don't need that much TPS to be sub-20. I have a slow-turning video and easily sub-20. Slower turning with no pauses would be great.
