The Solve Critique Thread

Hey guys, just finished an average of 5...

All feedback/critiques welcome!

Ok, I didn't even finish watching the first solve. I got tired of squinting my eyes trying to see the cube that is smaller than the size of my pinky nail. I really don't care about the time in order to give you a critique... I'd rather have the view of you solving full screen and not see the timer at all. So... since I can't really see what you're doing that well, I can still advise you based on what I hear.
1. Don't talk while you solve.
2. Get rid of pauses... I can tell this by the sound... try to get smooth flowing solves with no pauses. Slow down and look ahead. (This is a very common piece of advice.)
3. The rest is just practice. You'll naturally get better at recognizing F2L cases and what OLL/PLL cases you have.

http://youtu.be/oXYMjpT-rxM a new solve with the following times - 47.27, 46.71, 42.76, 44.89, 52.28

average is 46.29

I can see you have some good habits forming, like solving with cross on bottom. You're even color neutral?!
First thing: while doing M2, do M2', triggering with your ring and middle fingers (or your pinky), but not with your index finger. You want to split the burden of your fingertricks between as many fingers possible or you'll spend half your time pausing.
Work on recognizing and setting up your F2L pairs. There were _so many_ cube rotations, and eventually you should cut that down to 0-2 a solve. First step: learn to do the normal inserts (R U R'; R U' R') in the back right and back left slots.
Speaking of rotations, you execute your y/y' cube rotations a little awkwardly. It wouldn't hurt to explicitly develop some of your finger tricks. Like just walk around and do the sexy move a lot and your hands will become more comfortable turning the cube.

As for LL, just make sure to find algorithms that work well with your fingertricks as you fill up your library. All of PLL first, OLL if you feel like it. It'll come with practice.

Just a quick question - Is it OK if I post some of my (around 1:15/30ish) solves? Im trying to get better, and I well, Suck...

Yeah bro! We all start somewhere. However, do like 100 solves and I'm willing to bet your average will drop by 10 seconds at least.

Edit: so apparently this wasn't the latest post.. Oh well.

Thanks a lot for the tips! I am color neutral (was color neutral since I could remember all the basic algorithms, cuz I would race against my friends, and I thought it would help my times). I will try to do the normal inserts in the back without the rotations. I am trying to also do the M2s better (different fingers). working on y rotations now! P.S. I now know every 4-look LL algorithm except for E-Perm... Can't get it in my brain... Also having trouble remembering between sune and anti-sune (both recognition and execution...)

faster than what I usually average and overall easy last layers, but i'm sure there are still many problems.
tips? thank you

I'd say maybe start working towards turning a bit faster. Other than that, great solves!

You found the scrambles!
Those were some really awesome solves to watch. Smooth turning, few pauses. I would agree that it's TPS that could be improved first, especially in the LL. Then the EOLine->F2L transition, maybe?

this is very good for me.

Rubik's cube
29/11/2013 2:37:37 PM - 3:06:00 PM

Mean: 19.109
Average: 18.941
Best time: 12.450
Median: 18.384
Worst time: 32.836
Standard deviation: 3.674

Best average of 5: 16.037
4-8 - 15.843 16.254 (15.459) 16.016 (17.939)

Best average of 12: 16.889

What are my weaknesses? And what is the difference between the 20 and 16-17's. I will upload a more average, average later.

Everyone is saying the same thing lol. I guess I'll do some PLL time attacks. What are other ways to improve TPS?

Yup. Rob (Brest) found them for me :D. TPS and last layer here I come...

Ive only watched the first 3 solves so far and what i have to say is you have the classic spamming tps technique. So much so that when you are turning you probably turn faster than when i do so for starters slow down and lookahead.
Then every time you pause you dont do y rotations which is good, BUT you do x (and almost x2) rotations without a regrip so often during f2l and pll recog so you should really work on that cause you should be able to spot pairs and recog pll without those (i could see some before you did those rotations)

Ill edit this with some more is a little bit probably

Edit: Now ive finished watching it so heres some more points
1) work on your cross solutions some are long but mostly work on your execution of the solutions cause some of those solves have 5+ second crosses
2) cross to f2l transition (i also struggle here) is pretty bad and when you have those good solves at the end you can notice that you have a good transition (the main difference). To work on this you can execute your cross solutions smoothly (not spamming) and looking for at least a corner or an edge at the same time
3) recog on oll and pll needs a bit of work (faster pll recog is the other difference i saw on the fast solves) try to work on 2 side recog for pll it will help
4) execution of some of your plls is pretty ugly/locky this is most likely pressure due to timing but you have to be able to execute smoothly during timed solves so just try to work on calming your hands (this is also hard)

the biggest thing i can say is just to work on lookahead because you have higher tps during actual turning than i do so i really think you could get a lot faster

also dont try and do to much of this before next week cause it could give you some real issues if you try to "cram" all this in one week

hope this helps :)
