The Solve Critique Thread

I average 23s for 3x3, and 5.5 is a good 2x2 time for me. Are you sure you don't mean 15.5?
You also ask if you're "good enough". For what? If you're going to a competition and want to get past the first round, you should probably be aiming for sub-20.
I got to second round when I was sub 35 :P
I suggest you watch as many videos as you can on YouTube in order to gain speed. You should also get a better camera. If you want us to analyze your solve and give productive comments, we need to be able to see it ;)

Also you should try not to lie too much about PB's. There are many world class cubers here who will spot a porkie pie in an instant. Be honest, and you will find things much more pleasant and constructive :)

Good luck now, and have fun!

Billy
Mods are funny? :P

I just did a hand scramble, I promise it was hard but I don't have a video to prove it. Furthermore I can't remember the scramble

Solve: 0.45 seconds

Solution: R'

This is off topic but... the reason why sometimes hand scrambles either turn out solved or only a few moves away is that sometimes our fingers are more comfortable performing certain moves in some sequence and any sequence will eventually turn back to a solved state if you repeat it long enough. I know I have a certain sequence of moves that are comfortable for me. If I scramble without being consciously "random" I will tend to repeat the same moves over and over again. So normally if I do hand scrambles I intentionally perform some uncomfortable/unnatural moves on purpose or do some rotations and things.

If you think your last layer is the part that needs work, do you have problems specifically with recognition or execution (ie. looking at the case and remembering the right alg OR actually performing the alg)?

My PLL recognition is pretty bad. Anything I can do?

EDIT: My execution isnt that good either

These solves aren't necessarily *average*, but they are recent, and I think criticism on these solves would be as helpful as on others of mine.
Here's another more recent average, but this is definitely below average:

A comment on anything anyone feels I could work on would be wonderful, I don't have any reconstructions or anything though. :( Scrambles are in the descriptions of the videos if you need them for any reason. Thanks so much to anyone who responds! :D

Probably just the transitions between steps (specifically between f2l pairs and last f2l to oll to pll), maybe increase TPS?, you had some moments that looked like you lost your rhythm during your solve so work on making the entire solve look smooth with no pauses? it's really hard because not a lot of people are faster than you.

27 seconds solve . Please tell me how I can improve

This is just one of my solves. Can you guys watch it and tell me where I can improve? I only started cubing 2 months ago. I average between 33-38 seconds. My personal best is 25.24 seconds.

Protip: if you usually average 33 - 38 seconds, then posting one freak solve of 27 seconds will not be a genuine representation of your solving skilz. Try posting a more realistic solve.

Learn and practice look ahead. Right now you're moving fast with lots of pauses. Try slowing down with no pauses and then gradually increase speed. Let the limiting factor to speed be your brain not your fingers.

For future, you can embed video and post in the Solve Critique Thread.

Edit: You could consider a better cube (I'm not sure what you're using currently). Here's a slow turning video to show that you don't need to turn that fast for good times.

1 - edit your original post, instead of double-posting
2 - use K0poun98Epg (without spaces) to embed your youtube video in a post.
3 - slow down
4 - as others have said, post a video of an average of 5 or 12 in the solve critique thread to get better feedback. You can't expect to learn much when you admit that this is one of your better solves - if you post one of your average solves, the advice will be much more meaningful. Don't worry about impressing people by posting fast solves only.

Hey guys. Looking for some tips on just getting faster in general. I know this average is 14.06, but I wouldn't say I'm sub 15, very near it though. I average sub 15 unless it's more than an ao50. These scrambles were decent, and I think these solves give a good representation of how I normally solve. So yeah, sorry about the webcam quality. It's all I have at the moment... But any tips are appreciated!

18.09 PB 3x3 solve

Just now. PLL skipped.

Reconstruction:

Scramble: F' D2 B L2 R2 F' B2 L F2 B L2 U' F' L U2 D F' B2 R' D2 F L U B' U

Inspection: x2 y'

Cross: U R2 F U L'

First slot: z2 U2 y2 (When I do this I sort of do both U2 and y2 instead of just doing a wide move, it's a nasty habit) R U' R'

Second Slot: U y2 D R U R' D'

Third Slot: y2 L' U' L U D L' U' L D'

Fourth Slot: U y2 R' U' R d2 L' U L

OLL: y' F R U R' U' F'

AUF: U

TPS: 36 turns = 1.99 TPS

Curiously, the LL for this solve was nearly exactly the same as my previous personal best of 18.61, just without the AUF.

Curiosities aside, any tips for improvement here? I'm averaging about 35-40 seconds when I solve, and the main thing I'd like to be able to do is cross on D. I find that really annoying to do for some reason... :/
