anyway, I'm glad that I got some valuable input from Ms. Strong against the issue. Didn't really get much argument for the idea, only against, so this is a scrap for now. However, since I still think that there could be benefits (although with a clearly significant number of pointed out risks (i.e. spamming)), does anybody seem to have a more viable option that would still maintain the whole progress tracking idea to it? Like I said, I think it's got merit, and I'm happy that it got discussed respectfully on both sides. If anybody's got any last words, I will be happy to read them, and, if not, a mod can feel free to close the thread. :)

If the system worked in the way the OP described, how would it not make for "constructive and interesting cubing discussions"?
How would any new discussion come out of discussing cubers' progressions? When people give suggestions on how to improve, they're all recycled tips that have been mentioned so many times before.

Ugh... fine then I'll start to think. I should be clear though, I'm essentially just playing devil's advocate here, because I don't really care about having a new subforum (we have more than enough already), and I wouldn't use it myself (in saying that, I would have loved such a thing 6 years ago). Mainly I just took to Mr. 420 because of his writing style ^_^

First let's be clear about the words we use. We're going with "constructive and interesing", not necessarily "new".

Here are some things that come quickly to mind:
- When giving advice, cubers could refer to others who had confronted similar challenges, and demonstrate how they approached it and the results they got from that. This would be much better than saying "with 50 solves a day you'll be sub30 in a week".
- We could get a realistic idea of how quickly people progress when learning different puzzles. e.g. say someone is averaging 17s on 3x3 and then they start learning 4x4, how long does it take them to get sub1?
- We'll be able to compare how different people progress in different ways, depending on how they practise.

For once we would have real data to work with. I don't see how this could possibly be a negative thing.

You can't do what you want from a subforum. What you need for that is a database that allows generating statistics. The best place for that is not a subforum but an online timer.
Just look at the amount of trouble people have to go through to find out about 666blind and that is a VERY rare event. It also didn't really generate much useful data about progress, just a nice list.

(of course technically it would be possible to do this with a subforum, a standard format and scraping, but the weekly competition is a good indication of how hard that would be)
