So, I just got done with timing a lot of solves, and my average somehow dropped by five seconds within the past two days. I don't know why, it just did, and since I killed my DIY last week, this was on a pretty bad storebought. My avg. of 25 was at 33 and dropped to 28. Does anyone know what could lead to a drop like this?

I think cubing is very susceptible to a plateau-followed-by-sudden-drop type of improvement. I also get long periods of little to no improvement, followed by noticeable drops over a short period of time. I think weight-lifting and other dexterity or strength types of training might be susceptible to this as well. I wonder if this is a characteristic of human learning in general, or only as it applies to certain things.

It is VERY strange indeed.
thats how cubing goes.
Just last week I NEVER got a sub 13 average EVER and I struggled over 2 years to just get one.
And now in just the last 4-5 days... I have gotten 4 sub 13 averages now

If I learn a piece for my bass-guitar, the first day I play it sloppy and the second day I play it more smooth(er). Depends on the difficulty though.

I also had this for 2H cubing, when I was around 20 sec average.

Sadly, that happens to me the whole time. When I average 30 seconds, I just solve for a week, and no improvement. I wake up some day and I start getting 26-27 second solves.

Hope that happens again so that I can go sub-20 the whole time :D

i completely agree.
im at around 17-22s with fridrich.
yes, i know that kind of range is ridiculous at around 20s... but its true!
if ive had a rubbish day, for example, cubing rarely cheers me up. in fact, i generally just get angry and throw it around... and i average sup 20.
whereas on a good day, when im not too hot or cold, and ive been warming up for a while, i can bust out very consistent 15-19s times.
i think technique also has an underrated influence on cubing - even if i lookahead well, if my turning isnt accurate then ill just pop and lock, and that distracts me, and ill get like a 24. but then if ive been doing it for a while, and feeling confident my technique just goes through the roof, and with roughly the same lookahead i can happily bust out a sub 15... its very peculiar.

Lol, same happened to me.

Im on a plateau, haven't improved from my sub 25 averages for a while now..

I remember my times had a sudden drop from 40 - 35s, then stayed there for a few weeks, and another drop from 35s to 28s.
