[Help Thread] Square-1 Discussion

Oh no, I don't use screw, I do this:

Cubeshape, LD block, RD block, BD, FD+CPLL, EPLL (I call it Lin method, not because of Brandon (sorry hehe), but because of Tse-Kan Lin, some taiwanese cuber)

What I planned on doing was to move forward and learn optimal L2E for first layer then do PLL (43 algs), but then I kinda lost interest in sq-1, and started to doubt whether this could compete with Vandenbergh. I mean let's say I do go on and learn all of this. What new alg sets could I or anyone learn to improve even further? I have once considered FD+PLL but that seems scary...

EDIT: In my experience, sometimes Lin can be a good method because first block can be very very easy to spot and also FD and/or BD skips aren't rare. What I dislike the most is probably the fact that building the RD block can be slow and might not actually be a good step overall, and also for EPLL, I really HATE the opposite edge swap case ("I perm" as it's sometimes known I think...) It takes me like 5 seconds in a solve to do I perm...

Oops.
Well, isn't that like a variant of screw?
Start with the blocks, then do stuff.

Well yeah, I guess so, but people probably can't tell what steps I do when I'm solving a sq-1 if I say that I use screw. I only learnt about screw, after learning about Lin. I don't think the inventor based his method on screw somehow. I don't think it was even documented at the time...

Can anyone give me advice on how to get faster?

I average around 1:30 on the square-1

I use the method of grouping all the edges together, and then doing the sequence of moves to get it into the cube shape.

Corner orientation is not a problem, but sometimes I get fiddly and have to repeat moves.

EO I know about 3 algs, CP 2 algs and EP 3 algs.

I use 2 J perms to solve U perms and the cubeshape can take up to 30 seconds to do.

David Woner has a good video on advanced cubeshape. You should be able to sub 10 cubeshape by just knowing kite kite, kite scallop, fist fist, barrel barrel, and scallop scallop.

As for CO, just make sure you can do it in 1 look all the time without trouble.

With EO, just learn all the cases whenever you have the time. Not that big of a deal.

For CP, learn all the CP cases asap because there's only a few cases to learn and they're all really fast.

As for EP, learn adj-adj, opp-opp, and all the O-perms and you should be able to do EP relatively quick.

just practice cubeshape you should be able to easily sub 10 it with some practice
co is like l2c on 4x4
for eo you only need single swap, m2, and adj adj
cp start learning all of them they are easy
ep all you need is one parity alg, opp-opp, and adj-adj there is no point in learning 4 o perms when you average 90 sec, i dont know any o perms and i average 15

regardless of what method you use or how many algs you know you can be sub 40 with practice

Square-1 (and Super Square-1!) Basics

I compiled a basic sheet explaining what to do once you get the SQ-1 back into cube shape and can get the white/yellow corners separated onto their own layers (all white, then all yellow) if you understand my Greek. :fp

Major props go to Emile (elimescube) for his SQ-1 tutorial which I very much like--again, this is just the basics, and I haven't tried to speedcube the SQ-1 yet.
I also found the checkerboardy thing on Google, and threw in some cool Super SQ-1 stuff because it's clearly cool~

Not sure if actual Super SQ-1 notation exists, but I made my own and would like to share in case anyone actually owns a super SQ-1!

And I'm lazy and didn't type Square-1 out every time... Sorry!

Notation: edge = 1 corner = 2 90° = 3 180° = 6 right side 180° = /
[ - ] = Turn counter-clockwise [ + ] = turn clockwise …Bottom layer is inverted!
Step 1: get SQ-1 back to cube shape
Step 2: fix ALL the corners! :P
Step 3: swap edges (right) 1,0/0,-3/0,-3/-1,-1/1,4/0,3/
Step 4: swap corners (bottom front) /3,-3/0,3/-3,0/3,0/-3,0/0,3
Step 5: double parody (Top and Back front and right) 0,2/0,-3/1,1/-1,2/
Parity: /-3,0/0,3/0,-3/0,3/2,0/0,2/-2,0/4,0/0,-2/0,2/-1,4/0,-3/0,3
Align middle layer: /6,0/6,0/
Switch layers’ positions: /6,6/
A cool checkerboard-ish pattern: 1,0/-1,-1/4,-2/-1,-1/3,-2
...and the Super SQ-1 shtuff:
Notation: edge = 1 corner = 2 90° = 3 180° = 6 right side 180° = /
Top outer = O top middle = M bottom middle = m bottom outer = o
[ - ] = Turn counter-clockwise [ + ] = turn clockwise …Bottom layer is inverted!
All algs are the same as Square-1, but middle layer alignment is negated and you must solve only two layers at a time (both must be either inside or outside).
Core rotation (right half) (referred to as “R”): 0,M1/O6,M-1/O6,0/
Core rotation (both halves): R [rotate entire puzzle 180°] R

I average about 1:10 on sq1 and I wanna get faster. I use the standard beginners method, I think. I'm not too sure on the name though, but I do cubeshape (~10-20s usually), CO (~3s), EO (first permute edges to UB/UF and DB/DF then just M2 U2 M2 (I'm too lazy to type the sq1 alg)) (~5-10s), CP (~4s), then EP which takes about 15s probably.
For EP since I'm too lazy to learn the algs I just do each layer individually. Unless it's double u-perm, in which case I set the bars on L and do: (1,0)/(-1,-1)/(-6,0)/(1,1)/ then put the 2 swap on U at UB/UL and the one on D at DB/DR, then I do (1,0)/(3,0)/(-1,-1)/(-2,1)/(-1,0)

What should I do to get faster? Btw, the times are just estimates from my mind, so I'm not sure how accurate they actually are.
I'm using a mf8 v2 sq1 too.

I'll ask Rob on IRC at some stage. How does Y-perm help? According to Rob's desription of the Lin method, you solve DB, then solve DF + corners. I see what you mean though, and that might be just as good and appraoch to doing DF DB corners (Do blocks, solve corners + setup DF DB to the M2 case, M2).
