As I was solving today, I was on the 4th slot for F2L, and as I was about to do U' F' U F to put the CE pair in, I realized that the ENTIRE cube was oriented and permuted, except the 2 cubies in the slot, and the 2 cubies that made up the connected pair. So then I just turned it to the side and did the J perm. :D It would have been an incredibly fast time if I had timed myself. :(

Do R2 B R B' R D2 L' F L D2 with cross face on the bottom to see what I mean.

lol! never happened to me... and i've been cubing long enough to have 2 OLL+PLL skips. So statistically the chances of that must be REALLY low.
of course, maybe i just didn't notice. Interesting though :D

Now that I did that algorithm I realized I run into them alot. Most of the time it looks like the end of a Roux solve though but I usually get something similar and never noticed it.

I have the weirdest luck with cubes like that day I got 8 PLL skips.

hmm that is pretty crazy - i wish that had happened to me
I've been cubing for over a year and I've gotten a last layer skip once but it was after I finished f2l

So statistically the chances of that must be REALLY low.

8/497664 or 1/62208 to be exact.

More precisely that is the chance that given you have already paired the last corner and edge in the LL that the remaining LL pieces are in such a position that once you line up the pair with the F2L slot, it will be solvable via the J perm on either the F or R face (assuming you place the slot at FR).

Intersting that it works out to be the same as the odds of getting any one particular last layer position after having solved the F2L. I guess that does make sense in that given that the F2L pair is already made there is only one configuration of all the remaining LL pieces such that it is solvable with the J perm. Since there are 62208 possible positions of those LL pieces, then yes I guess that does make sense.

Interesting chance, and also good observation especially during a speedsolve!

You can create a number of similair cases by doing: R/F' [y] any PLL [y]' R'/F

[y] and [y]' = any orientation of the cube around the y axis + restore.

Some cases are easy to spot, some are not... But, with probabilities like those Chris are presenting you probably only waste your time looking for them, maybe better not :P

Chris: Im sure I mentioned this to you at WC, when we were talking about F2L tricks. Since I had no other F2L tricks!

Hey Joey,

I do remember you mentioning that now that I think about it. To be honest I have never used that F2L trick, but I will try to look out for it in the future.

Also if you look at the odds of a LL skip after you have used that F2L trick they improve to 1/72 or just the odds of a PLL skip. That's much better than 1/15552 lol ;-)

i was just joking, i get what u mean, what exo means was that he still used an PLL algorithm, which means he saved 4th pair and OLL (the steps).

I still had to pair up the 4th pair, though. So didn't skip the entire 4th pair. :x

BTW, I just got my first LL skip last night, didn't have to do rotate the U layer either. :/ Wasn't timing myself, once again. :/

lol, i've gotten 2 LL skips and like i didn't time myself on either one. if you look at it, it's sorta like x (woah! 4th pair +OLL skip! and j perm), lol.
