Hi there guys

I followed a video on youtube on how to lube a 3x3x3. After some lubing with Silicon spray, it actually feels worse :( And i'm sure i didn't spray on too much.

What can i do now? Should i sand the cubies slightly? What grit sandpaper?

Yeah just leave it overnight or whatever, it's quite common for it to feel worse soon after lubing

How did you lubricate it?

In my experience, I've found that if you use the "Remove one piece, spray it in" method, then the cube will feel quite tight. The lubricant needs to dry, when it is wet, it will make the cube feel worse.

Here's my method for lubing a cube - I think it's by far the best (I've tryed dissasembling the cube, spraying in from a fixed edge and imo this works best)

First, get a rag, then take out the middle piece of a side and it's two corresponding corners. Then Spray a generous helping of the lubricant onto the rag, forming a wet patch - rub the wet patch into the open area of the cube, rotating the dissasembled side of the cube, to cover it nicely.

Put the pieces in again, and repeat for all 6 sides.

This works well because it dries the lubricant as well, and ensures only a sufficient coating is placed on, as well as being a quick and easy method.

Otherwise, just work the cube around a bit, solve maybe 10 or so times to get it perfect.
Also, you need to "break the cube in", the best way I've found to do this is missalign sides, and force them to turn (not too forcefully mind you) this will stretch the cube out a little, and after a while, it will move beautifully.

If you want to sand them down, use the black wet and dry emery cloth you can get. Choose a fine grit, and sand the cubes a little by swiping it through edges like a credit card.

My method:

Take it apart and clean all the pieces of excess dust etc and put all the edges in a line (or gruops of lines) and same with the corners. Spray from about 50-70cm away making sure ot get all the pieces. Leave for 15 - 20 mins and rotate to the next side and repeat.

Put it back together and inevitably i whinge that it turns to fast!

Ok, you've lubricated your cube with silicone, and if feels worse. That's normal, as the silicone is just getting in. Solve the cube 5+ times and your cube will get much faster.

It doesn't matter how much silicone you put it. The more you put it, the less friction the slices put on each other so if you put more (and don't let it dry), It go like 2 rotations in one flick and if you put a drop, it'll go a little faster and smoother.

These situations happened to me so I know what I"m talking about.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I have no idea what's going on, but it's still not okay. What i did was i took the cube apart, and did the lube method where you lay out all the cubies, spray the one side, leave it for a while, turn the cubies, spray another side, etc etc etc. I then put it together and solved it a bunch of times, and that's when i made this topic, because even after about 15 solves, it still felt bad.

Then i thought maybe the lube needs to dry a bit more, so i took the cube apart and left it overnight last night. This morning i put it back together and it felt exactly the same.

My other cube that's NOT lubes feels WAY better than this one. These are both brand new cubes though.

By the way, i read somewhere that if you sand down the arcs othe the center pieces the cube cuts corners better, is this true?

Thanks guys!

Well,

The cube does fell bad after lubricating it sometimes. Did you break in your cube befor lubing it? Meaning did u lubricate a one day old cube or an older cube?

It was a brand new cube. I assume that's the problem then? I actually bought 2 of those cubes, and the non-lubed one is WAY nicer.

SO what do i do with the lubed one now? Is there anything i can do?

First of all, exactly what kind of silicone spray did you use? Are you sure it was a lubricant? There are silicone sprays out there that are adhesives.

Why don't you try taking it apart and cleaning the silicone off? Then put it back together and see if it feels better. If it does, then you know it was whatever you lubed it with.

Okay first of all, you're not supposed to lubricate new store bought cubes right away...... You have to let the pieces grind together for like a week.

It still feels bad? Really? Well the same happened to me when I lubricated a cube for my friend and it was worse and I felt upset. I was all ashamed of myself. But then a week later I compared it with my cube and it was actually faster!

How many times did you solve it? If you don't know how to solve it (seeing that you just bought the cube), scramble the cube for 10+ minutes. It SHOULD be going faster by then.

What's your silicone spray brand? Does it have any oil based products such have WD 40 in one of it's ingredients?

This should all work.

It's a lubricant ;)

Yeah, it feels worse. No idea why :(

I solved it about 15 or 20 times but it felt exactly the same.

The silicone spray isn't oil based as far as i know...

Thanks for the advice guys. Looks like i'm gonna have to solve it in it's currents state for a few days and see how it ends up :)
