I picked up some silicone spray at the auto store today hoping to transform my regular cube into something faster.

I followed the directions I'd seen on youtube, disassembling the cube and making a quick spraydown on each side of the cubies, letting it dry, then spraying the other sides.

After I reassembled the cube, it feel very sticky and gummy. There is a large initial resistance to getting a face to turn. I thought maybe I over-lubed it, so I disassembled the cube again and wiped down all the interior faces with a paper towel. This seemed to help, but only slightly.

Any ideas? The cube was previously lubed with vaseline but I wiped down all the cubies before applying the silicone so hopefully it would have been clean at that point.

Well,

It would depend upon the type of spray you used. I have used a few different ones and have had mixed experiences with them. Almost always the cubes gummed up at the start... but the more you work it in and use the cube the more smooth the action becomes.

I have heard that the cube lube stuff is a wonder and way better than silicon anything. You may want to try that out.

I know there are a million different tutorials about how to lube a cube... most tell you to take the cube apart and spray it down, I find just spraying a bit into the cube at the middle row to be enough...

hope this helps

The sides will eventually smooth out. The stuff I use usually takes a day or two to break in, but it's always gummy at first. What brand of spray did you get?

It is Gunk "Liquid Wrench". In the ingredient list it has petrolium distillates and Butoxy Ethynol, which I think are supposed to be bad for your plastics from what I heard.

However, I've been searching everywhere and nobody around here sells pure silicon lube in either a spray or grease form that I can find.
