sDLfj's Progression Thread

I actually ended up doing pretty good. My 3x3 and 4x4 averages were about the same as at home. My pyraminx times were a bit higher, but still pretty close. My first solve of the competition and first official solve ever was a DNF (2x2). I could have gotten an extra, but I didn't think about it at the time. The timer wasn't reset and I didn't check it, so it never actually timed my solve. I also bombed my 2x2 solves, but got a great single of 3.49. I was 1 spot (.3s) away from making 2nd round in 3x3 and 2 spots (<2s) away from making 2nd round in 4x4. But I made 2nd round and then finals in pyraminx, so I can't complain too much (15/64 place in pyra).

Also, if someone get's a DNF, should I write their time down or just DNF. I thought that the time should be written down but I heard people saying today that it wasn't necessary.

That's only necessary when there's a cumulative time limit (which is more common to happen in BLD events)

At the comp, Ezra Shere (world-class pyra solver), got a 1.66 average, putting him at the 2nd best in the world.
Tymon got a 4.08 3x3 single, and Luke got a .56 2x2 single (Tymon got a .72 on that scramble).

My goal is to get within the top 1000 in the US for at least 1 event (so far I'm closest in pyraminx, but I think I can get it in skewb). Is there a way to see what those times would be (like who is the thousandth best in ___ event)?

I've been getting bored with most events, so I want to focus on blind and get good at it. I've had multiple 2bld successes yesterday, and I'm planning to get good at corners and edges separately before an actual 3bld attempt. I have twisted corners figured out, and I'm still figuring out new cycles, but I got a success (sighted) using new cycles, so I think I have the basics figured out.

I got a 3bld success where I did the corners and edges separately (with new cycles and a flipped edge) and wrote down the letters and referenced them. So, in theory I could do a complete 3bld solve, I just haven't tried it yet.
I'm also working on lookahead, I'm timing myself using lookahead and I'm only about 5 seconds slower, so I'm going to start looking ahead more.

I've been mainly practicing 2bld while writing down and referencing the letters. I did 10 solves today, with 50% accuracy, but, I can feel myself getting more and more confident and I'm making less mistakes than before. I think I'm progressing pretty well.

Edit: I did 3 more solves the same way, all successes, the last 5 were all successful. I'm going to work on memorizing the letters and then timing myself tomorrow.

I'm struggling to remember the letters for 2bld. I'm failing most of the time because of this. Should I make a letter-pair spreadsheet or isn't that necessary yet? If anyone has any tips for this I'd appreciate it.

I just did 1000 timed 3x3 solves this year. I went from low 30s at the beginning of the year, to low 20s now, with relatively little practice. I'm going to start practicing lookahead, since pauses are a big weakness for me.

I've been doing some 2bld. I'm pretty confident doing it completely blind, but I mess up sometimes just due to trying to be fast. I tried doing it for the weekly competition and messed up the first two by stopping the timer early, and on the third I missed a new cycle.
I average about 1:25 on 2bld with 50s memo and 35s execution.

I've been struggling with getting a solid memo on bld. Most of my failures are due to memory loss. I'm planning on making 2 lists of each letter. One list for the first letter of a letter pair, and another list for the second letter in a pair. So, I'm memorizing 48 words for letters rather than 500+ for a letter-pair list.
For example. In my first list G is green and in my second list P is parrot and S is snake. So, GP is green parrot, and GS is green snake. It's not as solid as memorizing letter pairs, but it's much easier, and I think it's good enough for 3bld (and maybe low quantity multi-blind).

@Jorian Meeuse Am I approaching this completely wrong, or do you think this method would be good enough to get a sub-1 3bld single (which is my eventual goal)? Do you have any other advice for learning 3bld? The only thing preventing me from a success is memorizing all of the letters.

I wouldn't recommend that. It would mean you have to memorize twice as many words per cube, which is not ideal if your problem is memory loss. Making a full letter pair list is 100% recommended, but not completely necessary. I believe I only finished my list when I averaged almost 30 seconds on 3BLD.
To get to sub 1, all you need is fluency with M2/Orozco for exec, and for memo just practice. Using audio memo for edges could also help in the long run, but be prepared that it will probably initially make your success rate approximately 0 lol

I was bored, so here's a recon of my 3.49 2x2 solve.

It could have been better, but it's still a good time, so I'm happy with it.
