I'm pretty sure this has been thought of, used, or discussed, but I can't find anything about it on the forums.

So the 4b step for Roux is when you solve the UL and UR edges, essentially solving the L/R layers, leaving 4 edges in the M slice.
And if you solve UF and UB instead, you can still do L4E the same way (with slightly hindered recognition), then AUF at the end.

Example:

M' U2 M2 U M U' M2 U2 M' U' M as the scramble.

M U' M' U' // now I moo again, but watch the UF/UB edges
M U M' U // the UF/UB edges solved, and now it's the dots case
M E2 M E2 U // AUF at the end. 13 STM.

It saved 1 STM compared to using the L/R edges, so not much of an advantage.
This would probably be more advantageous if you got a UF/UB skip, or if both UF/UB are already in the D layer.
I noticed this when I was mindlessly solving and accidentally tracked UF/UB, and didn't notice that I did that until I had to AUF at the end.

Opinion on this? Does anyone actually do this?

I know someone who does this all the time. And well- quite simply it ony saves moves when it saves moves. I dont do it often because it screws up my super special secret 4c recog technique but i guess if you were quick minded you could see which is faster to do at EO and do it.

Well I currently use that 4b to 4c transition thread's recog technique, so it doesn't change recognition at all for 3 cycles.
Sometimes i track the wrong edges and i end up with a surprise AUF at the end, and it's no big deal.
The 4c recognition is okay for dots and U/D bars, but the F/B bars case can get ugly.
