Should we remove 2x2 as an official event ?

With 2x2, pyraminx and skewb, Someone who gets a lucky enough scramble can get wr single (we saw this with the skewb u perm), with clock however this is different, you have to actually have some skill to get wr single, yes you can get lucky and get wr, but this is more like the 3x3 kinda luck you need, rather than just getting a u perm, or sexy or something like that. If anything I think we should remove single rankings and wrs for these events (2, py, sk).

Pyraminx and 2x2 are my favourite events and I put a lot of effort into them. I would hate to see either event removed or their rankings removed.

How is there luck in soccer? Unless you're talking about someone else messing up
The decisions the referees make in Premier League games are luck.

Idea that would avoid removing the event (copy and pasted from my facebook post):
What if we took the "fast and luck based events" such as 2x2, pyraminx, and skewb and reformatted them to be ao12/ao5, instead of ao5/sinlge. Rankings would be changed to your "average rank" being ao12, and your "single rank" being best ao5 in your ao12 (so the ao5 can't be over several rounds), and we would make single an unofficial ranking. The goal of this idea is to make these events slightly less luck based, and require you to have a bit more skill to get a world record. This would be of course extremely hard to implement for a lot of reasons, but what are everyone's thoughts on this?

My idea for implementing this would be to, just take everyone's current pr ao5 and keep that, then make the ao12 a new thing and implement that as if we where implementing a new event, but ofc this system has a lot of flaws.

I feel like that might just take way too long for people who average 20+ seconds on 2x2.

I actually kinda like that. If they need an objective standard for a "luck-based event", sub-1 WR single works. The obvious problem is that it would take longer, but not longer than 7x7. My main problem with those events is that they're luck-based and boring to practice. This would somewhat fix that problem, not that I would make any of these my main event or anything, but I might practice them a little more.

Yes, with some wca legal scrambles, I can .3 2x2, .6, pyra, and .8 skewb
i can do that for 5-7 and mega and crush max
5-7 and megaminx scrambles can be 2 moves from solved, according to the subregulations following the one brodo mentioned.

  • 4b3e) 5x5x5 Cube, 6x6x6 Cube, 7x7x7 Cube, and Megaminx: sufficiently many random moves (instead of random state), at least 2 moves to solve.

2 move scrambles in 3x3x3 (let alone anything bigger) are over 47 times less likely than winning the Powerball lottery on back-to-back tickets.

Powerball win on back to back tickets: (1/292201338)^2 = 1.17*10^-17

Getting a 2 move scramble: 243/((12!*8!*2^11*3^7/2) - 19) = 5.61 * 10^-18

If you really think you can break a WR on those events, I hope you plan on going to WCA competitions for billions of years. Going to one every weekend over that time period might give you a fraction of a percent chance of getting one.

I'm quite lucky, you'll never see my sub-1 single coming

Responding to those who are using the point of 2x2 World Records becoming too fast:

Honestly, I don't think that 2x2 should be removed simply because there are so many competitors that average around 8 seconds or so.

I get that the top ~5% of cubers are going to be getting sub-2 averages eventually, and 2x2 is going to become extremely quick, but you have to remember that not every single person competes for a world record. Therefore, why should an event be removed due to the fact that the world records are going to get fast? When the world record average becomes "impossible", most cubers won't even be close to that.

We should consider the majority of the cubing community, not just the small group of world-class solvers.

No one thinks it should be removed, there are just some people that think singles are stupid. And they have a point, I average like 5 seconds and use LBL but have a .50 single because of a 4mover

Definitely a great idea but then only one of 2,skewb and pyra would be held at a 1 day comp, as it would take to long
