I just recently got a 5x5 and I want to start speedsolving it, but it is SOOOO tight. Especially the outer layers. In fact it is much easier to do (Rr) and r, then R. I can literally turn the u slice without holding on to the U slice. That's how tight the outer layers are. So, has anyone else had the same problem? How did you fix it?

Btw, it's a Rubik's 5x5.

Just keep working with it. Before you know it, that Rubik's 5x5x5 will be SOOO loose it will pop every time you use it.

I just got the new studio 5x5x5 3 days ago and it was also very tight. All I've been doing to it is spraying some silicone on the inside of it, then twist all the layers, doing a few solves for many hours and is gotten a lot better.

if its a store bought 5x5 it will most likely stay that way. load it up with silicon, if it still isn't too good, there isn't much you can do to my knowledge anyway. its the main reason why my 5x5 is now somewhere under the bed collecting dust

My 5x5x5 is still tight, although I haven't played with it much. My 4x4x4 was like that though, very tight for a long time, then I put silicone in it, and it suddenly became more loose than my uber 3x3x3, and pops quite a lot if I'm not careful!

Hmm never had problems with my newest 2 5x5's (or wait, maybe that is because one of them is OC and the other a very nice ES ;))
Nah seriously I had a rubik's, well actually it was a studio, too. Just play with it a lot lube it after a while and it should become better after a while.

Ya! Matyas is using that Rubik's now, I tried it, it was the best freaking 5x5x5 I turned besides your olympic. Very few Rubik's are that good :)

I got a tips about ES 5x : If they get too loose and the screws are in the bottom already. Then take it apart and sand down the tips of the spider a little and it is possible to tension the screws as hard as you like again.

That's Erik's cube if I am correct. xD
You should try mine, it has barely no friction when doing (R)r-moves, just ask Erik. :D

I use an eastsheen, its never popped it moves sweet, but, its way too small =/ my rubiks 4x4x4 pops alot, and my understanding is that rubiks 5x5x5's are the same kinda mechanism, so they must pop alot also :P

LOL My eastsheen has actually popped quite a bit. I like, throw it into my backpack (not the smartest thing... but oh well) and poof. Everything has come apart. So I take it home and reassemble it lol. But it hasn't really popped while I'm solving it, though it did happen to this one kid who was playing with it.

You should accept it. My cube is so lose that I can't use it anymore. So you are actually lucky.

My 5x5 Rubik's cube was really stiff when i first got it. Couldn't do any fingertricks. Sprayed some silicone in it and for about a week i kept turning the faces to wear them down. The faces turn smoothly now.
