I've got a pyraminx, and I managed to solve it intuitively a few times, but I'm still having a few issues.

First of all, what is the "last layer"? Would this be considered the largest layer, or the middle layer?

Next, I'm having some trouble with the beginner method. What usually happens, is I end up solving the largest layer completely, but then some edges in the middle layer are still wrong. I can eventually get it fixed if I just keep messing with it, but I can't work out exactly what I am supposed to do in those situations to solve it in an efficient manner.

Most people consider the "middle layer" to be the last layer.
Anyway, you should really look up a tutorial. It doesn't sound like you've tried very hard to find the information yourself. This thread is kind of unnecessary, imo.

This is where i learned it.

There are five algs for the last layer and you only need to learn three of them, two are reflections of the other two. Pyraminx is a generally easy puzzle to learn...and you should try searching for tutorials first or use the one answer question thread.

EDIT: 500th post

Search the wiki.

But to answer your question, the last layer method varies with the method. For example, for Oka, the largest layer is the last layer. For beginner's method, the last layer is the middle layer.

Of course I searched around first, but I didn't find the information that I was after. The wiki page for the pyraminx feels horribly incomplete. Pretty much all it says about how to do the "beginner method" is just to use 2 algs to cycle 3 edges on the "big" layer, but that doesn't tell me anything about what to do when I need to move around the edges on the middle layer.
Searching for tutorials on youtube is of little help, because most of them are all just named things like "pyraminx tutorial" or "how to solve pyraminx", so I have no idea which method any of them are even trying to teach me until I watch them. I would like to start with "beginners method" first of all, and then move on to something else once I get the hang of that. Searching "pyraminx beginner's method" on youtube only gives one relevant result, but it seems to teach a layer first method rather than the "beginners method" that is described on the wiki.
And then, although the "oka" method seems to be one of the most popular methods, it doesn't even have a mention on the wiki :|
Plus, a lot of the youtube videos I watched got me horribly confused because they would refer to parts with conflicting names, like sometimes people will call the corners "centers", and it was just getting me all mixed up.

But I guess I'll just learn the LBL method, because learning the 5 algs seems a heck of a lot easier than figuring out the so-called beginners method.

I had the chance to play with a Pyraminx for an hour or two at Iowa Open. I was about sub-20 by the end with my intuitive method. For the "last layer" I figured out a 2 flip for the edges, but it messes up the permutation. From there I use *Sune* and *Anti-Sune* to cycle the edges (although I really think of it as cycling the center...).

EDIT: Rpotts posted my algs...

2 flip edges (FL/FR) - R' L R L' U L' U' L (Hold the larger layer on bottom, this alg flips orientation of the two edges on the front face)

Sune/Anti-Sune to permute edges

Sune (counter clockwise permutation) R U R' U R U R'

Anti Sune (clockwise edge permutation) R' U' R U' R' U' R
