I was learning the Ortega method off of Erik's site http://erikku.er.funpic.org/rubik/ , and I have trouble recognizing the cases after orienting the white and yellow faces.

Also, one other problem I'm having is that when I perform the alg to orient the top layer, I find that they don't work. Instead, it still stays unoriented. I'm not saying that all cases are like this, just some. One example would be the 4th alg after Step 1 (I'm not sure if I'm just performing it wrong..)

Does anyone have any other sites with short, efficient algs for some Ortega cases?

Thanks :D

The recognition for the cases in step 3 was a little confusing at first but it's pretty easy once you know what to look for. Your cube won't always look just like the cubes in the pictures. You are looking for blocks on the U and D layers. The first three cases should be easy enough to recognize. For case 4, you have that case if there is a block on U and a block on D and they are different colors. They can be either opposite or adjacent colors, it doesn't matter. You have case 5 if there is only a block on the D layer. If there aren't any bars on either layer but the whole cube is vertical bars that are all opposite each other, you have case 6 (the easiest case). If you have a block on U and a block on D and they are the same color, you have case 7. In this case line the blocks up and put them in the back before applying the alg. Finally, you have case 8 if you only have a block on the U layer.

As for the algs to orient the top layer, you're probably holding the cube incorrectly. To make sure you're holding the cube the right way, just apply the inverse of the algs and look at what you have.

Hope that helped!

I now understand it!! Thanks so much Jason for the explanation (there's one on Erik's site, but I'm like huh?). You clarified everything :D. Oh yeah, I did do the alg wrong :P.

again, thanks so much

I suggest learning Guimond to complement Ortega. On a given scramble, one will be faster than the other, and there are only 7 guimond algs that I know (reflections = 14). The remaining case can be avoided a large percentage of the time it appears. The alg sucks for it, also.
